VTO survey

The Community Outreach Subcommittee of the Inclusion and Excellence Council is conducting a survey on the Volunteer Time Off program to gain an understanding of use of the program and where employees are volunteering and to get feedback on organizations that could be recommended to employees in the future. Please take 5 minutes to complete this survey.

Curriculum Committee seeks vice-chair

The School of Medicine seeks a vice-chair for its Curriculum Committee. The vice-chair plays an active and vital role in medical education at the College and will serve in a leadership progression of two years as vice-chair, two years as chair and two years as past-chair. The new vice-chair will be given opportunities for orientation to the committee, training and mentoring. Training for employees with student financial information access

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) training has been launched in SuccessFactors and assigned to Baylor employees that have access to student financial information. GLBA requires all financial institutions to explain their information-sharing practices to their customers and to safeguard sensitive data. If you were not assigned the training but wish to complete the module, you may access the GLBA training in the learning section of SuccessFactors. New hire Compliance Education update

The Office of Compliance recently updated the required education for new employees by merging the Privacy and Security (HIPAA), Code of Conduct and Fraud, Waste and Abuse educations into one single module titled "BCM General Compliance Education." This new module has been activated in the system and the older educations have been deactivated. The new module also will replace the Privacy and Security (HIPAA) education as a requirement for Epic access. Lunar New Year celebration

The Lunar New Year was Feb. 1 and started the Year of the Tiger. Lunar New Year is celebrated in East and Southeast Asian countries and other regions and is marked by two weeks of celebrations to honor family, ancestors and deities. Join BCM's Lunar New Year celebration today, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the E-hallway at main Baylor, or visit the virtual kudoboard to learn more and add your reflections.

Postponed: Merchandise sale

Due to inclement weather, the BCM merchandise sale today at main Baylor has been postponed. Look for the rescheduled date to be posted around campus next week. This event will implement contactless payments - credit or debit card only.

BCM TEDx

There's still time to register for TEDxBaylorCollegeofMedicine: Reboot, Reframe, Reimagine, Tuesday, Feb. 8, 7 – 9:30 a.m. Hosted by the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, the virtual seminar will feature nine speakers from Baylor and the Houston community focused on improving health through science, scholarship and innovation. Datathon information session

An information session on Datathon 2022 will be held by Zoom Wednesday, Feb. 9, noon – 1 p.m. Datathon is designed to explore large data sets and train faculty to use them. The scope of this year's event includes data related to patient care at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center and Baylor Medicine, as well as education data. Proposals must encompass one of four focus areas: quality improvement, population health, research projects or education projects. The deadline to submit a one-page proposal to datathon@bcm.edu has been extended to Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. See criteria and examples of past proposals. The virtual Datathon will be from 2 – 5 p.m. April 21.


Awards and Recognitions

Davila named assistant dean of research

Dr. Jessica DavilaDr. Jessica Davila, associate professor of health services research, has been appointed as assistant dean of research informatics and data integration in the Office of Research. She also will lead BCM research strategic planning efforts in research informatics and data systems and expand informatics initiatives at BCM affiliates and local partner institutions. This will include establishing data governance policies across institutions to increase data access for researchers.

HIV awareness for Hispanic community

Dr. Shital PatelDr. Monisha AryaThe Houston AIDS Education & Training Center (AETC) collaborated with It's Time Texas, a statewide nonprofit, to create a campaign to support HIV prevention for Hispanic communities. Click here to watch the English and Spanish 'Get PrEP'd!' campaigns. The project is led by Dr. Shital Patel and Dr. Monisha Arya, both assistant professors of medicine – infectious diseases, and Harveen Kaur, an intern at AETC.
