Caption: The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has announced the 2022 recipients of the Equity Trailblazer Award, which recognizes significant contributions and accomplishments in moving Baylor toward being a more diverse and inclusive community. Recipients demonstrate this commitment through leadership in recruitment, retention and advancement efforts, teaching, mentoring, research, multicultural programming, cultural competency and humility, community outreach activities and/or other initiatives. The 2022 trainee honoree is Dr. Chantelle Shaw, third-year resident in general psychiatry. The faculty honoree is Dr. Roger Nicome, associate professor of pediatrics – hospital medicine.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Brooke Bernhardt, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, has recently been elected a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). ACCP recognizes excellence in practice and science of clinical pharmacy and fellowships are awarded to individuals who have made sustained contributions to the College and who have demonstrated exceptional performance in clinical pharmacy practice and/or research.

Dr. Chethan Rao, associate professor of medicine – neurology and neurosurgery and medical director of the Neuroscience Critical Care Unit, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Neurocritical Care Society. NCS is a professional society representing multidisciplinary teams of neurocritical care providers whose mission is to improve outcomes for patients with life-threatening neurological illnesses.

Coming Up

Going-away celebration: Please join Baylor for a reception to honor and thank Dr. Alicia Monroe, provost and senior vice president of academic and faculty affairs, for her leadership. The event will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 8, in the Alkek DeBakey lobby. Dr. Monroe has accepted the position of chief integration officer and senior adviser to the president at Old Dominion University (ODU), in Norfolk, Va., effective Sept. 6.

Blood drive: The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 and Aug. 10 in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Those who donate will receive a free T-shirt and eligible participants can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points. Reserve your spot.

Book club: The Medical Humanities Program at Texas Children’s invites all to attend its quarterly book club featuring “Such a Fun Age” by Kiley Reid, Aug. 9, 3 p.m. Read at your own pace and join the discussion by Zoom (Meeting ID 926 7702 0680, password 535329), hosted by Dr. Kriti Puri and Dr. Amanda Ruth, both assistant professors of pediatrics. Annual compliance education: The FY ’23 annual compliance education will be assigned in SuccessFactors to all Baylor faculty, residents, staff and students, on Aug. 22. This year’s topic will focus on privacy and security. This year, providers will receive CME Ethics Credit for completing the training. This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Keep an eye out for further communications regarding this important education initiative.

Flu Study: The Baylor Vaccine Research Center is seeking volunteers to participate in influenza research this fall. If interested, please register. Male volunteers needed for HPV study: Researchers are looking for male participants between the ages 50 and 64 for a screening trial aimed at early detection of HPV-related throat cancer. Showcase of Educational Scholarship: The Academy of Distinguished Educators at Baylor will hold its annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 in Rayzor Lounge. Submit an educational research abstract by Aug. 15. Two categories are open for trainees and faculty/staff. The top presentations in each category will receive an Educational Scholarship Recognition award. Please see Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Guidelines for detailed information.
