Heczey receives cancer grant funded by Today show viewers

Dr. Andras HeczeyDr. Andras Heczey, assistant professor of pediatrics, received a grant from the American Cancer Society funded by viewers of the Today show through its Shine a Light campaign. The four-year, $583,000 Mentored Research Scholar Grant will support his work on an immunotherapy treatment approach for neuroblastoma. Heczey is mentored by Dr. Leonid Metelitsa, professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Malcolm Brenner, professor of molecular and human genetics and pediatrics. Baylor faculty earn grants from Dunn Foundation

Meng Wang, Herman Dierick and Ido Golding were among those to receive research seed grants through the 2015 John S. Dunn Foundation Collaborative Research Award Program. Administered by the Gulf Coast Consortia, the awards foster new, collaborative and inter-institutional projects in the life sciences. Read more about their projects online. In addition, the Dunn Foundation will support a research symposium to be held spring 2016 co-hosted by Dr. Theodore Wensel of Baylor.

Register and submit abstracts for annual CVRI Symposium

Registration and abstract submission are open for the annual >Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium, which will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge at the main Baylor campus. The symposium will feature keynote speakers Dr. Mark E. Anderson from John Hopkins Hospital and Dr. Eric Boerwinkle from University of Texas Health Science Center. The day will include scientific lectures, poster presentations and awards, as well as a heart healthy luncheon. Best poster winners receive a cash award. Merrill publishes memoir on life and career

Dr. Joseph Merrill, professor emeritus in family and community medicine, has published a book, “As It Was … But Not Now: A Memoir,” that chronicles his youth, college and medical school years and career while also offering insight in to Southern culture and medical education in a changing environment. Merrill was born in 1923 in Alabama and educated at Vanderbilt and Harvard before launching his career at the NIH and Baylor. The book is available online at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Albert Schweitzer program recruiting prospective fellows

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Houston – Galveston is accepting applications for its 2016-17 class of fellows. The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is a one-year interdisciplinary, mentored fellowship program focused on health-related community service and leadership development. Students enrolled in graduate or professional degree-granting programs interested in applying should be prepared to partner with a local community agency and design a community service project that provides direct health service to an underserved population. Volunteers needed for study on depression and gut function

Participants are needed for a study to understand how depression and gut function may be related in youth. Volunteers between the ages of 7 and 17 years who have experienced symptoms of depression and those who have not experienced any such symptoms are both needed for the study. Volunteers must be healthy, not have taken any antibiotics in the past six months and not have taken any psychiatric medications in the past three months. The study visit will involve completing questionnaires, providing a stool sample, taking a sugar solution and collecting urine for 24 hours, a blood draw and bone scan. Volunteers will be compensated for their time and mileage will be reimbursed. Those interested should complete the following online screening form.
