Suarez honored by Neurocritical Care Society

Dr. Jose SuarezDr. Jose Suarez, professor of neurology, was recognized for his outstanding work by the Neurocritical Care Society, receiving three honors at the society’s recent meeting. He was named the new secretary for the organization after unanimous approval. He also was presented with the Presidential Service Award for his contributions as a member of the board of directors, where he was chair of the research training fellowship task force and co-chair of the research committee. Finally, he also was nominated by leadership as a recipient of the Presidential Citation in recognition of his work to strengthen the neurocritical care community. Suarez has also served as a member of the board of directors and on the editorial board of Neurocritical Care, the official society journal.

Vasudevan receives grant for liver cancer research

Dr. Sanjeev VasudevanDr. Sanjeev Vasudevan, assistant professor of surgery, was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Macy Easom Cancer Research Foundation. The grant will support his research into hepatoblastoma, a form of pediatric liver cancer that typically affects children under age 5. Vasudevan is a pediatric surgeon specializing in surgical oncology at Texas Children’s Hospital. His research laboratory focuses on validation of potential therapeutic targets found in neuroblastoma and hepatoblastoma.

DocTalk Nov. 3

The next DocTalk is Tuesday, Nov. 3, at noon in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus with Dr. Philip Alapat, assistant professor of medicine – pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. He will speak on “Sleep: What’s the Big Deal?” Benefits-eligible employees who attend the informal talk with a question-and-answer session following will earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Cancer Center Symposium Nov. 6

Mark your calendars! The 13th Annual Duncan Cancer Center Symposium is set for Friday, Nov. 6, at the Children’s Nutrition Research Center. Clinical faculty mentors needed for med student program

Clinical faculty are being sought to serve as mentors in the BCM Learning Communities Program for the 2016-17 academic year. Faculty mentors support medical students in discovering their professional identity while assisting during their transition to medical school, guidance during their preclinical years, transition to their clinical years, career planning and residency match. Nominations open for Rising Star Clinician Award

Nominations are being accepted for the Rising Star Clinician Award, established by Dr. Paul Klotman to honor outstanding up-and-coming clinicians annually. Applicants with five to 12 years of clinical service at Baylor will be considered for their exemplary qualities of clinical excellence and expertise, consistent high level of patient care, professionalism, commendable leadership skills and continuous service to our community. BCM MS 150 team

In 2015 BCM had its first organized team for the BP MS 150 with 26 participants. BCM BeWell would like to make 2016 even bigger by recruiting 75 cyclists! Register today to join Team Baylor College of Medicine for the ride from Houston to Austin. Riders should also complete the Team BCM Registration Form for jersey orders, logistics and additional information. Respiratory protection program

Baylor’s respiratory protection program ensures that all employees required to wear respiratory protection as part of their jobs are protected through the proper use and application of respirators. This is accomplished through a process known as “fit testing.” The Office of Environmental Safety offers initial and annual refresher fit testing on an appointment basis in Ben Taub Annex room 215 and on a monthly basis at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The You FIRST Program will be hosting a Halloween costume contest Friday, Oct. 30, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in various locations across BCM. Please arrive at the locations no later than 12:45 p.m. to participate. One winner will be selected from each location. See contest rules online. Contest locations are:
