Barajaz honored for developing residency program

Dr. Michelle BarajazDr. Michelle Barajaz, assistant professor of pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, has received the Award for Achievement in Educational Innovation from the department of pediatrics for the academic year from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015. She was recognized for her achievements in developing, organizing, implementing and administrating the new pediatric residency program at CHoSA. She was presented the award on Oct. 7 by Dr. Mark Gilger, professor of pediatrics at Baylor and pediatrician-in-chief at CHoSA. Baylor is the academic partner of CHoSA.

Medical student Xu wins essay contest

Ang XuAng Xu, a second-year medical student, has won the David R. Cox Prize for Rare Compassion, an essay program that connects medical students with patients with rare diseases and conditions. His winning essay, “The Complexities of Medicine Lie Outside Textbooks and Examination Rooms,” focused on a family with a child with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome. The program is presented by Global Genes and Student Advocates for Neglected Diseases. More than 70 student submissions were narrowed down to three prize winners, who were recognized last month at the 4th Annual RARE Patient Advocacy Summit in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Market Days at BCM Oct. 21

The next Market Days is Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Vendors will include Brenham Kitchens, Chocolate and Sweetness, Gold Leaf Coffee, Kristi’s Kitchen, Revolucion Juice and L Chocolate, which features chocolates handmade by Baylor employee Scott Buss. Baylor student group CHEF also will bring in fresh produce from Central City Co-op. Submit pre-orders online for fresh fruit and veggies by Sunday, Oct. 18, for pick up produce at Market Days. NRI to host annual Issam M. Fares Family Lecture

The Neurological Research Institute and Dr. Huda Zoghbi will host Dr. Alim Louis Benabid for the second annual Issam M. Fares Family Lecture Thursday, Oct. 22, at noon in Cullen Auditorium. Benabid, who received the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and the 2014 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, will speak on “Current Perspectives in Neuromodulation: From Electrons to Photons.” A reception will be held on the first floor of the NRI immediately following his talk.

Compassion lecture Oct. 23

The next Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture is Friday, Oct. 23, at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium with Sami and Laura Rahman, who will share their experiences as the parents of a child with cerebral palsy and short gut syndrome. The series is presented by the department of family and community medicine.

TMC Day at Rice football game Oct. 24

Saturday, Oct. 24, is Texas Medical Center Day with the Owls at Rice Stadium. Tickets are $20 for reserved and $10 general admission for the Owls vs. Army West Point. Game starts at 11 a.m. Purchase tickets online – promo code TMC.

Gender Infinity Conference

The Gender Infinity Conference, a Houston-based annual conference that aims to bridge the gap between providers, advocates and families of transgender and diverse youth, will be held Oct. 23-24. Several Baylor faculty members are involved in the conference, including Dr. Robert McLaughlin, dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, conference organizer, and presenters Dr. Megan Mooney, Dr. David Paul, Dr. Jennifer Feldman and others. CME credits available.

Perinatal Outreach Program Oct. 30

Baylor’s Perinatal Outreach Program is presenting the 39th annual Nursing Symposium Friday, Oct. 30, at the University of Houston Hilton Hotel. The symposium is geared toward registered nurses to incorporate current concepts and issues related to prenatal and postnatal care into practice. The symposium is jointly presented by Texas Children’s Hospital, and nursing contact hours are available. Register online.

Alex’s 5k Nov. 14

Correction! Alex's 5K, set for Saturday, Nov. 14, will be held at MacGregor Park, not Tom Bass Park as previously stated. Register online for the event that raises money for local and national autism programs.

You FIRST Halloween costume contest

The You FIRST Program will be hosting a Halloween costume contest Friday, Oct. 30, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in various locations across BCM. Please arrive at the locations no later than 12:45 p.m. to participate. One winner will be selected from each location. See contest rules online. Contest locations are:

Managing to the Mission

Registration is open for Managing to the Mission, a two-day course for Baylor employees who are in a management role or on a career track to become a manager.
