Matzuk and colleagues receive Welch Foundation grant

Dr. Martin MatzukDrs. Martin Matzuk, Barry Morgan and Gwenn Hansen of the Center for Drug Discovery have received a two-year, $2.8 million grant from the Welch Foundation to support their work to study disease pathways and develop new medicines. Matzuk holds the Stuart A. Wallace Chair and Robert L. Moody, Sr. Chair in pathology. The Welch Foundation supports basic chemical research in Texas through grants and other programs. Compassion and the Art of Medicine today

Dr. Andrea Link of the department of family and community medicine will speak today at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on "Vulnerability, Courage and Compassion: Lessons Learned." She will focus on her experiences working with women incarcerated in Harris County. The lecture is part of the annual Compassion and the Art of Medicine series sponsored by family and community medicine.

Register free for virtual education fair

Free registration will open Sept. 2 for the EdAssist Virtual Health Education Fair, which will be held online Thursday, Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The online fair is geared toward working adults who are considering continuing their education or who want to gain specific skills to advance their careers. Learn about the educational options from the comfort of your desk.

Evenings with Genetics focuses on transition to adult care

“What Families Need to Know for a Successful Medical Transition,” part of the Evenings with Genetics series, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Houston. The seminar will discuss planning, social support and resources for teenagers’ successful transition from pediatric to adult healthcare. Speakers include Dr. Ellen Fremion, assistant professor in Baylor’s Transition Medicine Clinic, and Samuel Garcia, medical social worker at the clinic. The program is free but registration is required. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30. Spanish interpretation will be provided.

Captains needed for annual softball tourney!

You FIRST will be hosting a softball tournament for BCM employees and students Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Houston Sportsplex. Team captains are needed to recruit players and organize coed teams. If you are interested in serving as a team captain, sign up online by 5 p.m. today. A team captain conference call and softball signups will be held the week of Aug. 31. Register for ‘Managing to the Mission'

Registration is open for “Managing to the Mission,” a two-day program for Baylor employees in a management role or on a career track to become a manager. Topics will include leadership assessment, teambuilding, communication skills, effective meeting presentations, delegation, best practices at BCM and an overview of key policies.
