National Kidney Foundation honors Adrogué

Dr. Horacio J. AdroguéDr. Horacio J. Adrogué, professor of medicine – nephrology, is one of the recipients of the 2015 Crystal Slipper Award from the National Kidney Foundation Serving Texas. He will be honored at a lunch on May 12 in downtown Houston. He is being recognized for his clinical work and research and is being honored along with his son, Dr. Horacio E. Adrogué of UT Houston, and community activist Harriet Rosmarin Gertner.

Diaz-Marchan earns professionalism grant

Dr. Pedro Diaz-MarchanDr. Pedro J. Diaz-Marchan, associate professor of radiology, received a 2015 Association of University Radiologists Ethics and Professionalism Grant from the AUR Research and Foundation Board of Directors for his grant on professionalism and ethics competencies for radiology residents. He was recognized at the AUR Awards Luncheon in New Orleans last month.

Friedman honored by professional association

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Ellen Friedman, professor of otolaryngology and director of the Center for Professionalism in Medicine, recently attended the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings in Boston, where she was honored by the American Bronchoesophagology Association. The organization renamed one of its excellence awards the Ellen M. Friedman Award for Excellence in Foreign Body Management. The award acknowledges her leadership within the ABEA and her expertise in foreign body management. It is intended to encourage continued leadership in endoscopic foreign body management and is given annually to a person who submits a winning paper that describes excellence in innovation, skill and education in the field.

TMC Orchestra to perform May 9

The Texas Medical Center Orchestra will be performing on Saturday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Wortham Center. The orchestra will perform Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony” with the Houston Masterworks Chorale. It is an epic composition and one of Mahler’s most popular. There will be more than 200 musicians on stage, including many Baylor students and faculty members. Tickets are available online or at the box office. Student tickets will be offered for just $10 at the box office starting one hour prior to the concert; student ID required.

Quality and safety conference May 14

The Baylor College of Medicine Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference will be held Thursday, May 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. It will offer discussion and strategies related to patient safety and value in healthcare, and Baylor faculty, fellows, residents and students will present their peer-reviewed work in the area of quality and safety. The conference is free and is open to physicians, residents, health professionals and medical and allied health students from the Houston region. The conference qualifies for 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Register online.

Vaccine continuing education course

The National School of Tropical Medicine, together with the National Center for Therapeutics Manufacturing at Texas A&M University, is hosting a one-day continuing education course on the topic of “Vaccine Adjuvants and Delivery Systems.” It will be held Wednesday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Feigin Center, 14th floor conference room. Instructors will include Baylor’s Drs. Maria Elena Bottazzi, Michael Heffernan and Jeroen Pollet. Register and find more information online.
