Butel honored by TMC Library

Dr. Janet ButelDr. Janet Butel, professor and chair of molecular virology and microbiology, will be among the women honored at the Texas Medical Center Women’s History Project reception on Thursday, March 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the foyer of the TMC Library, 1133 John Freeman Blvd. The project’s goal is to preserve the honorees’ oral history interviews and materials within the TMC Library’s archives and to make them available to researchers and institutions of the TMC. The event is free and open to the public. MS 150 Team BCM silent auction

The BCM MS 150 team riders will be holding a silent auction March 19, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the main Baylor campus, E Hallway. All money raised will go toward a donation on behalf of Team BCM for the MS 150 campaign to combat multiple sclerosis. Silent auction items include an elliptical machine, sports memorabilia, gift baskets and more. If you have any questions or would like to donate an auction item, contact Jesse Gavin at jgavin@bcm.edu.

Match Day March 20

Match Day will be held Friday, March 20, at the courtyard by the main Baylor cafeteria. Brief remarks will be given by Dr. Paul Klotman, the 2015 class president and others starting at about 10:45 a.m. Fourth-year medical students will open their envelopes notifying them of their residency match promptly at 11 a.m. Approximately 183 fourth-year medical students at Baylor are participating in Match Day, which is the culmination of the national program that pairs fourth-year medical students with residency programs throughout the nation. Faculty and staff are encouraged to drop in on the courtyard festivities.

Lupus seminar

Baylor, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Lupus Foundation of America Texas Gulf Coast Chapter will present “Pediatric Lupus and Rheumatic Diseases: A Primer for the Clinician” on Saturday, March 28, at the Texas Medical Center Marriott. Medical volunteers needed for Avon Walk April 25 – 26

For the eighth year in a row, Baylor will serve as the official medical sponsor for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Houston. This year’s event is April 25 – 26. More than 1,000 walkers complete the two-day, 39-mile journey, and medical personnel are needed to assist in the medical tent. Led by Dr. Polly Niravath, assistant professor in the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, medical volunteers will help care for the walkers, which can include protection from blisters, dehydration and other special circumstances. Volunteers must be licensed healthcare professionals to serve in the medical tent. There are a variety of shifts (ranging from 3.5 to 6 hours) to sign up for on Saturday and Sunday:
- Saturday, 12-6 p.m. (8 people)
- Saturday, 4-9 p.m. (8 people)
- Sunday, 5:30-10 a.m. (16 people)
- Sunday, 10-4 p.m. (12 people)

The 2015 Chao Physician-Scientist Award

Applications are being accepted for the Chao Physician-Scientist Award, which provides funding for young investigators who are beginning their independent research careers. The one-year awards provide up to $100,000 for basic, clinical and translational research projects by junior faculty. Applicants should have completed their fellowship and be in the process of seeking or awaiting funding of a K08 or a K23. The Chao-Physician-Scientist Award is made possible through a generous gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation. Submission deadline is April 3. Find more information online.

Competition on tropical diseases open to students

Baylor students interested in neglected tropical diseases are encouraged to join the NTD Challenges student competition sponsored by Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Designed to raise awareness about NTDs and their impact on public health and to encourage student activism, the competition includes two challenges – a student engagement essay and development of a children’s outreach concept. Prizes include gift cards, the chance to have your work published and paid attendance at a high-level conference at the Baker Institute on “The United States and Mexico: Sharing a Legacy of Neglected Tropical Diseases and Poverty.” Details can be found online.
