Awards and Recognitions

Cowart and Desai receive patient safety grant

Drs. Jennifer Cowart and Samir Desai, both of the department of medicine and staff physicians at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, were awarded an Innovation Grant from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine for their proposal, “Creating and Implementing a Patient Safety Checklist App for Residents and Students on Medicine Wards.” The grant will be used to develop and test a patient safety checklist app for inpatient wards rounding for residents and students. Physician-scientists named to clinical investigation society

Dr. Stephen GottschalkDr. Wolfgang WinkelmayerDr. Stephen Gottschalk, professor of pediatrics and a member of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy and Texas Children’s Cancer Center, and Dr. Wolfgang Winkelmayer, professor of medicine and the Gordon A. Cain Chair in Nephrology, have been inducted as members of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, an honor society of physician-scientists who translate findings in the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice. Winkelmayer and Gottschalk will participate in a special induction ceremony in April at the ASCI/Association of American Physicians joint meeting in Chicago.

Simlympics champs

The Baylor Simlympics team was crowned national champions in the Simlympics competition at the American Medical Student Association’s national conference for the second year in a row. The competition involves medical students working to stabilize and treat a simulated, critically-ill patient. The team includes first-year medical students Luis Fernandez, Andrew Kohner, Saagar Patel and Evan Strobelt. They will go on to compete in the international Simlympics event in Belfast, Ireland, this summer. Their faculty sponsor is Dr. Tyson Pillow, assistant professor of emergency medicine and medical director of the Simulation and Standardized Patient Program at Baylor.

Market Days at BCM March 11

Market Days at BCM will be held Wednesday, March 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. This month’s vendors include Gold Leaf – Café Hacienda Real Coffee, Kristi’s Kitchen (jellies and jams), L Chocolate (artisan chocolates), and Rawr Juice (cold pressed juices). Cash or credit card accepted. Market is a monthly event hosted by BCM’s Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program featuring local fresh, organic and healthy products. Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction Ceremony

All faculty, residents and medical students are invited to attend the 2015 Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, March 11, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. At the ceremony, 25 fourth-year medical students and 30 residents will be recognized for exemplifying academic and humanistic qualities in their practice of medicine. Several of the new inductees will share their experiences on this topic with the audience.

Inaugural Alford lecture March 13

The inaugural Bobby R. Alford, M.D., Grand Rounds Distinguished Lecture will be held Friday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Mahlon R. DeLong, professor of neurology at Emory University School of Medicine, will speak on “Circuits, Circuit Disorders and Rationale for Deep Brain Stimulation.” The lecture series was endowed by the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations in honor of Dr. Bobby Alford, professor of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. It will be held annually with a focus on the clinical practice of medicine, particularly the fields of otolaryngology, cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Charity Bowling Ball March 13

Join Baylor medical students for the Charity Bowling Ball on Friday, March 13, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., at Palace Bowling Lanes, 4191 Bellaire Blvd. The event benefits Houston H.O.M.E.S. Clinic and the Camp for All Foundation. Individual and group tickets and sponsor packages are available for purchase at the door (cash or check only) or online. Inspiration behind film “Decoding Annie Parker” to speak March 19

Annie Parker, a cancer awareness and genetic testing advocate, who was among the first group of women to be tested for the BRCA gene – and the inspiration for the 2013 film “Decoding Annie Parker” – will speak in Baylor’s Cullen Auditorium March 19 at 6 p.m. A breast and ovarian cancer survivor, Parker will participate in a book signing, question-and-answer session and BRCA panel discussion. Violin concert benefitting BIPAI

“Divine Strings for BIPAI,” an evening of classical Indian music, will be presented on Saturday, March 21, at 6 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Performers include first-year medical student Aishwarya Venkataraman. Purchase tickets online. Proceeds benefit the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Morrison joins main Baylor

Morrison food service on the main Baylor campus will start March 9 with a limited menu, such as grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, including vegetarian options. Full cafeteria service will start March 16. Morrison catering services also will be available throughout the Baylor campus. In addition, Morrison will operate the coffee corner on the third floor of the DeBakey Building on the main campus starting March 9. The coffee corner will undergo a significant renovation later this year, and more communication about that will be coming later. Morrison joins Mary O’s as new food service providers at Baylor College of Medicine.

Provide your input on parking and more

Provide your input on information technology, infrastructure, available space, upkeep of facilities and more by completing an online survey. Responses to the survey will be used to prioritize improvements to services and amenities for faculty, staff and trainees. The survey will be open through March 20. All responses are completely anonymous.
