Estes honored for achievements in science

Dr. Mary EstesDr. Mary Estes was one of three women honored at the annual Women in Science with Excellence (WISE) luncheon, held Jan. 23 at the River Oaks Country Club. The lunch celebrates the achievements of women in technical disciplines. Estes holds the Cullen Endowed Chair of Molecular and Human Virology and is a professor of molecular virology and microbiology. She has developed vaccines for gastroenteritis viruses (rotaviruses and noroviruses). WISE, an initiative of BioHouston, is dedicated to advancing women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Singhal honored for excellence in teaching

Dr. Geeta SinghalDr. Geeta Singhal, associate professor of medicine and director of the Office of Faculty Development, was selected as the winner of the 2015 Academic Pediatric Association’s Teaching Award for Faculty for Mid-level Faculty. The award recognizes excellence in teaching among APA members and supports faculty who demonstrate excellence in and commitment to teaching. Singhal is recognized for her excellence in medical education and also is a leading educator in pediatric hospitalist medicine.

Register for Intensive Bioethics Training Course

There is still time to complete early bird registration for the weeklong Intensive Bioethics Course offered by Houston Methodist Hospital and the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor. The course, to be held May 11 - 15, is intended for healthcare professionals who are interested in developing knowledge, skills and competence in clinical ethics and includes lectures, case discussions and panels led by nationally recognized experts in bioethics. Course topics are unique, practical and will provide immediate benefit to your work. Early bird registration offers a discounted price and ends Feb. 1. Register online.

Volunteers needed for tissue bank

Volunteers are needed for the Susan G. Komen Tissue Bank, Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center at the McNair Campus, 7200 Cambridge. At the event, breast tissue and blood will be collected primarily from women with no known evidence of breast cancer, and these samples will be stored and will later be available for breast cancer researchers. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks, some of which require medical and technical knowledge. Volunteer shifts are from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 12:30 to 6 p.m. More information and volunteer registration is available online.

Event to support childhood cancer research

BCM, UT Houston and Texas Children’s Hospital are teaming up to put on the third annual St. Baldrick’s head shaving event to raise money for childhood cancer research. The event will be held Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at The Ginger Man, 5607 Morningside Dr. Sign up or donate online.

Recycling contest kicks off in February

Baylor is one of more than 600 colleges competing in RecycleMania from Feb. 1 to March 30. Help the college reduce waste and win this eight-week contest by recycling cans, bottles, paper and more. Recycling bins are available for offices and lab space. To request bins and for more information, contact Allison Carr at allison.carr@bcm.edu or visit the Baylor recycling website.
