Prompt-Gamma Neutron Activation

Volunteer undergoing test for Total Body Nitrogen

The CNRC is home to one of six Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis machines in the world. This machine is capable of measuring nitrogen in the body. Nitrogen is a direct indicator of total body protein. A high nitrogen reading indicates healthy tissue. When this measurement is combined with measurements from the Total Body Potassium Counter (40K), scientists can determine total organ and muscle mass.
