40K Schematic

The measurement of potassium in the body by gamma counting is non invasive. Subjects are not exposed to any external radiation and no tissue samples (for example, blood samples or muscle biopsies) are taken.

The shielded room containing the gamma counter has thick concrete walls with a thin lead lining. Materials used in constructing the room were all pre-screened in order to confirm that they were not contaminated with excess radiation.
