Othman honored by BSLMC

Dr. Mohamed OthmanDr. Mohamed Othman, associate professor of medicine – gastroenterology, was selected to receive the 2019 Clinical Innovator Award from Baylor St Luke's Medical Center at the group's annual staff celebration, held Dec. 9 at Hotel ZaZa. Othman's pioneering work on endoscopic mucosal dissection was cited as one of the main reasons for receiving this award. He is chief of the gastroenterology section at Baylor St. Luke's.

Sarkar recognized by family med organization

Dr. Arindam SarkarDr. Arindam Sarkar, a resident in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, was selected to receive the 2020 Faculty for Tomorrow Resident Scholarship from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. This award provides support to attend the Faculty for Tomorrow Workshop in May, which focuses on career planning, leadership and teaching and academic skills and precedes the organization's annual spring conference. Sarkar will continue at BCM as an assistant professor when he completes his residency.


Events

Through Dec. 23: Food drive

The BCM Postdoc Association is collecting non-perishable canned food for the Houston Food Bank through Dec. 23. Donations may be dropped off in collection boxes located in the E Hallway by the cafeteria and Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.


College News

Holiday information

Baylor College of Medicine will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observation of Christmas and New Year's Day.

  • The BCM Shuttle Service will operate on an abbreviated schedule Dec. 23-27, and New Year's Eve, Dec. 31. Only the Red Shuttle will run from 6:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the following route: Main Baylor – Baylor Clinic – Jamail Specialty Care Center – BCM Medical Center – VA Hospital – McGovern Campus.
  • Morrison Cafe and the Coffee Corner at main Baylor will close at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Thursday, Jan. 2.
  • Mary O's Cafe at McNair Campus will close at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Thursday, Jan 2.
  • Other food options will be limited as well; be sure to check food service hours in the building where you work and other TMC locations.
  • The TMC Library will be closed from Dec. 21 – Jan. 1. Regular hours resume Jan. 2.

Easy scheduling within Baylor health network!

Employees and trainees who are not already seeking healthcare within the Baylor network are encouraged to migrate to Baylor providers. To assist with this process, employees and trainees may complete this online scheduling form to request an appointment with a new primary care or specialty physician. You will be contacted by a Baylor representative by phone or email within two business days to identify the right provider and complete the scheduling process.

Dispute industry payments by Dec. 31

Physicians have until Dec. 31 to dispute inaccurate reports of payments made to them in 2018 by industry, such as drug and device manufacturers. Payments from 2018 were made publicly available on the CMS Open Payments database earlier this year, and it will be updated in January 2020. Compliance and Audit Services is expanding its team with the addition of Monique Sellers, senior privacy associate. Sellers has a broad legal background and will serve as the HIPAA privacy resource for the College. If you have any HIPAA privacy questions or concerns, please submit them to privacycompliance@bcm.edu.

BCM BeWell news: Complete end-of-year survey

Complete the BCM BeWell end-of-year survey for an opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions on the BeWell program, one of the College's key wellness initiatives. Benefits-eligible employees who complete the survey by Jan. 15, 2020, will receive 50 BCM BeWell Vitality Points and be entered into a drawing for one of five $50 Amazon gift cards (applicable taxes will apply). Nominations open for Women of Excellence

Nominations are being accepted for the Women of Excellence Awards, which will be presented during Women's History Month in March. Nominees can be women and men, faculty, staff and trainees who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication to issues that affect women at Baylor College of Medicine or in the larger community while also exemplifying Baylor values.
