Healthcare workers: Join study on pandemic & sleep

Volunteers are needed to participate in a study to evaluate and track the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sleep quality of healthcare professionals and trainees. The study requires completing an anonymous, 10-minute questionnaire. Participate online. For questions, email Dr. Fidaa Shaib, associate professor, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

Disclosure of COVID status

The Office of Compliance offers an important reminder that BCM faculty, staff and learners may not discuss or disclose any information related to the actual or suspected COVID-19 status of a co-worker or learner unless it is necessary for treatment or payment purposes. This information constitutes confidential information and is protected under various laws, including HIPAA if the individual is a BCM patient. Failure to follow this standard can result in disciplinary action.


Awards and Recognitions

Grad student earns HHMI fellowship

Gabriella PerezDr. Joanna JankowskyNeuroscience graduate student Gabriella Perez, with the support of her adviser Dr. Joanna Jankowsky, was awarded the highly competitive and prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute 2020 Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study. They are one of 45 adviser-student pairs awarded this year. The Gilliam program seeks to increase the diversity of scientists in academia by supporting students who will become scientific leaders. Each adviser-student pair will receive an annual award totaling $50,000 for up to three years. Advisers will participate in a year of mentor training, where they’ll learn about cultural identities and how to listen and engage across cultures. Fellows will be invited to attend the annual Gilliam meeting and HHMI scientific meetings.

Ben Taub adds to recognitions

Harris Health's Ben Taub Hospital continues to earn national recognition from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for its treatment and care for heart attack, heart failure and stroke. The awards it has received acknowledge the hospital's cardiology and stroke services for expertise and high use of technology to administer life-saving care to the sickest patients. The cardiology and stroke programs are led by Baylor's Dr. Nasser Lakkis and Dr. Joseph Kass, respectively. Read more.

Aug. 12: Sleep apnea treatment

Learn more about Inspire, an FDA-approved sleep apnea treatment that works in the body to treat the root cause of the condition, at an educational webinar by Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. The webinar will be presented by Dr. Andrew Huang, assistant professor of otolaryngology. Learn more.

Aug. 19: MoneyTalk on Real Estate

Register for the MoneyTalk seminar on real estate, presented by the Society for Financial Awareness, Wednesday, Aug. 19, at noon via Zoom. Welcome, Grad and Med students

New students in the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences joined the Baylor family this week, but their welcome to campus looked a little different this year with pandemic guidelines in place, pictured above. Submissions open: Faculty mentoring award

The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics is accepting nominations for the Arthur L. Beaudet, M.D. Award for Outstanding Mentorship, endowed by Dr. Huda Zoghbi. All Baylor faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary mentorship, as reflected by the success of trainees, are eligible. Mentorship includes advice, feedback and guidance on research activities and/or patient care, coaching on work-life balance, fostering independence, providing professional opportunities and assisting in the development of speaking, writing and teaching skills. Contact Laura Rosales for submission details. The nomination letter, up to five letters of support and a CV are due by Sept. 1.
