Awards and Recognitions

Goodman honored by OCD foundation

Dr. Wayne GoodmanDr. Wayne Goodman, chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received a $500,000 Breakthrough Award from the International OCD Foundation to conduct a study of low-intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of OCD. Award winners were announced at the 2019 IOCDF conference, held July 19-21 in Austin.

Reddy to serve on AMA Student Section

Rajadhar ReddyMedical student Rajadhar Reddy recently was appointed as the Region 3 legislative chair for the American Medical Association's Medical Student Section. In this role, he will promote medical student advocacy opportunities and facilitate the writing process for resolutions on important medical topics in the south-central region.

Ph.D. student Smith earns research award

Eric SmithEric Smith, a Ph.D. candidate in molecular and cellular biology working in the lab of Dr. Courtney Hodges, received the Dacso Award for Excellence in Research, which is presented annually to support a medical, graduate or M.D./Ph.D. student in the molecular and cell biology graduate program. The award was created by Dr. Clifford Dacso, Baylor professor of molecular and cellular biology, in the name of his parents, Dr. Magda Rona and Dr. Michael Dacso, and was presented this week by Drs. Dacso and Hodges and Dr. Bert O'Malley.

Aug. 6: DocTalk on mental health

Join DocTalk Tuesday, Aug. 6, noon in Cullen Auditorium, for a discussion with Dr. Eric Storch, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, on coping with anxiety and other mental health caused by hurricanes and other storms. DocTalk is a series of informal talks on a variety of health topics led by Baylor experts. Eligible participants can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Aug. 12: Reception for Dr. David Moore

The College community is invited to a reception honoring Dr. David Moore, professor of molecular and cellular biology, medicine and molecular and human genetics, on his election to the National Academy of Sciences, Monday, Aug. 12, 4:15 p.m., DeBakey Library. Read more about his NAS election.

Aug. 13-14: VA conference on quality and safety

The 20th Annual VA Quality Scholars Summer Institute Conference is set for Aug. 13-14 at the Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building, 6767 Bertner Ave. It begins with a poster session with participation from the 2019 class of Baylor’s Institute for Continuing Professional Development in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, 3:45-5 p.m. Aug. 13, followed on Aug. 14 by a scholarly writing workshop, a keynote speech on "Co-Production of Care" by Dr. Paul Batalden of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, and a reception. The conference is free but onsite registration is required.

Aug. 17: World Doctors Orchestra

World Doctors Orchestra will perform Saturday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at Rice University's Stude Concert Hall, benefiting global medical aid programs. Dr. Rajeev Raghavan of Baylor is part of this orchestra, performing on cello. Purchase tickets online.

Aug. 22: Hurricane Harvey research update

Get an update on the state of environmental research and community disaster response activities two years after Hurricane Harvey at a symposium Aug. 22 in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor. The event is hosted by the Section of Epidemiology and Population Science in the Department of Medicine and the Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health, with additional support from the Environmental Health Service in the Department of Medicine. Best Hospitals rankings

The College's joint venture hospital, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, was ranked No. 2 in Houston in U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals rankings, and also performed well in several adult specialties, including Neurology and Neurosurgery, No. 18; Cardiology and Heart Surgery, No. 21; Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, No. 22; and Cancer, No. 36. Baylor's affiliated hospitals also showed strong rankings in the report.

PA Program earns accreditation

Baylor College of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program has achieved the status of "Continued Accreditation" from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) for the maximum 10-year cycle, through 2029. This accreditation is the result of more than four years of work by Baylor PA faculty, program leaders and staff, supported by additional School of Health Professions personnel, the Provost's Office, and other important contributors at the College. The program is ranked No. 1 in Texas and No. 3 in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

The repetition of positive behaviors can lead to lasting healthy habits, so join BCM BeWell's latest challenge to track daily health behaviors this August.
