Award and Recognitions

Buckmaster honored by animal association

Dr. Cindy BuckmasterDr. Cindy Buckmaster, director of the Center for Comparative Medicine and associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics, has received the Animal Transportation Association Public Service Award for her devotion to advocating the critical role of animals in improving lives worldwide and the unmitigated need for unfettered access to humane transportation of animals worldwide.

Goodman, Stolar named to board

Dr. J. Clay GoodmanDr. Andrea StolarDr. J. Clay Goodman, professor of pathology and immunology and associate dean of undergraduate medical education, has been elected chair of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Board of Directors. He will serve in this role through December 2019. In addition, Dr. Andrea Stolar, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and assistant dean of student affairs, was named to the board as one of the 2019 psychiatry directors, who are equally represented along with neurology specialists.

May 28: Commencement

Baylor College of Medicine's commencement is Tuesday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Jesse H. Jones Hall downtown. Congratulations to the graduates from the School of Medicine and from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, as well as to honorary degree and award recipients Dr. Marla Guerra, Liz Scott, Dr. Erin O’Shea and Dr. Ruth Simmons, the commencement speaker.

May 29: Behavior change webinar

"New Strategies for Enhancing Health Behavior Changes," a video lecture by Dr. Robert Reiher, an expert in developmental and educational psychology, is Wednesday, May 29, 3 to 5:30 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Reiher integrates neuroscience, consciousness research and personal development into health behavior programs to maximize positive behavior change. Sponsored by the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center. Open to all; refreshments provided.

May 30: Women in medicine mixer

Women working in healthcare and in all stages of training are invited to the American Medical Women's Association social mixer, Thursday, May 30, 5 – 7 p.m., Salento Wine Bar in Rice Village. Light snacks provided. RSVP online.

June 5: Controlled substance disposal

The Office of Environmental Safety will host the next DEA controlled substances collection/disposal event on Wednesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Alkek Building for Biomedical Research first floor hallway between the Jones and Jewish Institute buildings. Activities at Baylor where controlled substances may be used include animal research, human clinical research and patient healthcare. Learn more and complete a request form if you plan to dispose of substances.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Baylor has plenty of resources to help its employees and trainees stay healthy. Learn more on the Living Our Values webpage.

Volunteers needed for infant feeding study

Mothers with Hispanic/Latino white or non-Hispanic/non-Latino white infants (3-4 months old) are needed for a four month-long nutrition study. The study will require three in-person visits and several internet surveys and will involve description of the infant’s dietary intake, infant blood draws, body measurements and skin scans, and breast milk sampling if the mother is breastfeeding. Eligible participants that complete the study may receive up to $120 in grocery gift cards or a pre-paid credit card as well as complimentary parking at the Children's Nutrition Research Center for study visits.
