Hubert honored by ACMG

Dr. Leroy Hubert, Jr., a postdoctoral associate in molecular and human genetics, is the recipient of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics/ David L. Rimoin Inspiring Excellence Award, announced at the ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting last week. The cash award is given to a select student, trainee or junior faculty ACGME member whose abstract submission is chosen as a platform presentation at the meeting. Hubert works in the lab of Dr. Sarah Elsea, associate professor of molecular and human genetics.

Rau earns grant for leukemia research

Dr. Rachel Rau, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children’s Cancer Center, received a $25,000 grant from the Ladies Leukemia League for her research studying the causes of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, specifically the role of the gene IKZG-1. Her overall research focus is on developing new therapies for the treatment of pediatric leukemia.

Radiology-TEACHES recognized as Creating Value Challenge winner

Radiology-TEACHES (Technology Enhanced Appropriateness Criteria Home for Education Simulation) recently was selected by the ABIM Foundation, Costs of Care and the Leapfrog Group as a winner of the Teaching Value award under the Creating Value Challenge. The challenge is aimed at recognizing innovative ideas and projects for teaching and implementing high-value health care among collaborative teams of clinicians, educators, quality improvement specialists and health system administrators. Created by Dr. Marc Willis, associate professor of radiology and associate chair for quality improvement in the department, Radiology-TEACHES is a web-based program that uses case vignettes and clinical decision support to teach students and practicing providers about appropriate imaging through simulation education. Positive Exposure photo exhibit and lecture

Positive Exposure: A Photographic Exhibition by Rick Guidotti, who uses photographs to transform public perceptions of people living with genetic, physical, intellectual and behavioral differences, will be on display in Alkek Lobby at main Baylor March 27 – April 3. The exhibition will be capped off with a lecture by Giodotti April 3 at 5 p.m. in Room M112, followed by a reception in Alkek Lobby. The event is sponsored by the Association for Graduate Student Diversity, the Office of Career and Student Services and the Office of Philanthropy with support from the John E. Whitmore Endowed Lectureship. Learn more online

Sign up for the charity Bowling Ball!

The student-organized Bowling Ball charity event will be April 21 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the University of Houston’s Games Room. Proceeds will benefit the H.O.M.E.S. Clinic, a non-profit health clinic for the homeless. The fun event will include a bowling tournament, billiards, ping pong and silent auction. Dinner will be provided. Tickets may be purchased as a team of six or individually. Register or donate online.

CVRI Symposium April 4

The fifth annual Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium is Tuesday, April 4, in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. Keynote speakers are Dr. Christine Seidman of Harvard Medical School and Dr. Richard Gibbs, professor of molecular and human genetics and director of the Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor. The symposium also will include scientific lectures, poster presentations and awards, as well as a heart-healthy luncheon. Walk-in registrations are welcome on the day of the symposium. Register for ACLS-BLS first-time certification course

The Department of Emergency Medicine’s ACLS-BLS Program is offering an advanced cardiac life support and basic life support certification course on May 20-21. This is the ideal course for people seeking first-time certification or for those whose certification has lapsed past one year. The two-day course will include a review of the 2015 AHA guidelines and a written test and skills verification. The cost for ACLS certification is $260 and BLS is $80. Both prices include the course and card; manuals are sold separately. Introducing the BeWell StairWELL

Baylor doctors featured in the Healthy Habits blog series, including Dr. Alicia Monroe, frequently say they take the stairs as part of their healthy routines. The BCM BeWell program is encouraging use of stairs through the designation of the BCM BeWell StairWELL at main Baylor. Motivational signage has been installed in the stairwell along with estimates of calories burned per flight. A stairwell ribbon cutting will be held April 6 at 11:30 a.m., at main Baylor at the Anderson C Stairwell (next to Morrison's cafe in the E hallway). Pictures, prizes and BCM BeWell Vitality points will be available to benefits-eligible employees from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Inner ear study participants needed

Participants are needed for a study to help create better tests to screen for inner ear disorders. This will require two hours of time and will include a series of tests such as walking heel to toe, turning the head from side to side and more. Participants are asked to have no history of a diagnosed vestibular or neurological disorder, no previous surgery on the inner ear, no multiple joint replacements, and are able to stand and walk without difficulty.
