Professional Statement
Marco Maricevich, M.D., associate professor of surgery, is a double board-certified reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas. Dr. Maricevich was born in Washington, DC but raised in Brazil, where he received his medical degree. He returned to the United States for a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Subsequently, he completed a residency in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, followed by a fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is an enthusiastic and passionate reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon who has been the lead or contributing author on over 100 published scientific manuscripts, book chapters, guidelines, and abstracts. Furthermore, he has given scientific presentations at numerous national and international conferences. Dr. Maricevich is a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery; he maintains a close relationship with Brazilian academic institutions and plastic surgeons, who frequently invite him to lecture, teach courses, and operate there.
Breast reconstruction after breast cancer is one of his passions; he believes in a "shared decision making" process and individualized care to best meet the patients' expectations. Dr. Maricevich offers state-of-the-art surgical techniques with implants or using the patient's own tissue to reconstruct the breast. He offers microsurgical perforator tissue flaps from the abdominal wall (DIEP) or thighs (PAP, LTP) to avoid donor site morbidity; additionally, he routinely performs cutting-edge restoration of the breast sensation (nerve reconstruction on DIEP flaps and nerve-sparing nipple-sparing mastectomies). He also offers lymphedema treatment using lymphovenous bypasses, lymph node transfers, and/or liposuction.
Dr. Maricevich is the chief of Plastic Surgery at Ben Taub, a busy teaching hospital that cares for the vulnerable population in Houston, and uses advanced reconstructive microsurgical techniques for limb, trunk, and craniofacial complex defects secondary to trauma and cancer. He serves as the educational site director for the Baylor Plastic Surgery Residency and Hand Fellowship programs, training the next generation of plastic reconstructive surgeons.
Other areas of interest are Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) for neuroma and phantom pain in limb amputees. Dr. Maricevich also works at the Texas Children’s Hospital performing pediatric microsurgical procedures for facial palsy and cancer/trauma reconstruction.
Dr. Maricevich specializes in a broad range of aesthetic procedures of the face and body, combining precise surgical technique and excellent aesthetic judgement.
