Adhesions are tough bands of scar tissue that can develop in the abdomen, typically following surgery or after infections or inflammatory conditions such as endometriosis.
Pelvic organs can get caught in these adhesions and become attached to other organs or structures, causing pain, bowel obstruction and infertility.
Adhesion lysis is surgery to cut these adhesions, freeing the pelvic organs and restoring proper anatomy and function. The procedure is also known as lysis of adhesions, or adhesiolysis.
Lysis of adhesions is usually performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive approach that allows the surgeon to view and cut the adhesions through small incisions in the abdomen.
