The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers 7 interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs, 2 physician scientist training programs, a Master's Program, a Graduate Certificate Program, Summer Undergraduate Research and a post-baccalaureate programs.
Ph.D. Programs
With over 600 students and 540 faculty members, you will have a diverse group of potential colleagues, mentors and advisors at Baylor College of Medicine Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Our interdisciplinary programs integrate related research across basic science and clinical departments and academic centers. Because our faculty members have the freedom to elect to join programs based on their research interests rather than being locked into department structure, you will interact with faculty who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to your chosen field of study.
If your career plans include an academic appointment and teaching in higher education, you may elect to pursue a Biomedical Educator Certificate of Added Qualification after achieving candidacy, which includes both classroom training and practical experience.
Your program will provide a home base, setting your required coursework and qualification requirements and providing a network of faculty and students who share your interests. However, when selecting laboratories in which to rotate, and ultimately the one in which you will pursue your dissertation research, all the resources of BCM are open to you. You have the freedom to find your home in the laboratory of any of the members of the graduate faculty.

Develop new technologies and innovative methods and apply them to achieve a deeper understanding of biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology in human health and disease.
Development, Disease Models & Therapeutics
Work at the interface of developmental biology, physiology, health and disease using diverse disease models to understand the biology of human diseases that can impact all stages of life and develop diagnostic and therapies to treat them.
Genetics & Genomics
Contribute to our understanding of fundamental genetic principles and use the insights you gain to guide the development of new treatment options to improve human health.
Immunology & Microbiology
Investigate the importance of interactions between microbes, their hosts and the immune system in human health and disease.
Neuroscience
Acquire intensive training in one particular approach to neurobiological research while also gaining a strong background in other areas of neurobiology.
Quantitative & Computational Biosciences
Develop new quantitative modeling methods and advanced computational approaches to advance understanding of biological systems and improve human health.
Additional Options for Ph.D Students
Clinical-Translational Research: If you are interested in a career focused on translating biomedical discoveries into molecular medicine advances to benefit human health, you may elect to apply for the Clinical Translational Research Certificate of Added Qualification Program during your first or second year of your Ph.D. program.
Biomedical Educator: If your career plans include an academic appointment and teaching in higher education, you may elect to pursue a Biomedical Educator Certificate of Added Qualification after achieving candidacy, which includes both classroom training and practical experience.
Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences
The MS in Biomedical Sciences is a two-year program that provides a research-based education for a career in science. Students will develop technical, writing, and problem-solving skills necessary for diverse scientific careers.
Graduate Certificate Programs
Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences and Health Equity (BSHEq): The BSHEq program is a 12-month program, designed for college graduates wishing to enhance their applications into medical or health professions programs. The program includes MCAT test preparation, shadowing and community service opportunities, and graduate coursework.
Post-Baccalaureate Program
Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP): The PREP program is a 12-month program program funded by the National Institute of Health. It is designed to preparecollege graduates with the skills and knowledge to enter and succeed in graduate programs. The program includes mentored research, foundational coursework opportunities, professional development, and application workshops.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Training Program (SMART) is a paid 9-week experience for undergraduate students providing them with an opportunity to conduct research in a specific research area of interest. In addition, students will be provided professional development opportunities and weekly seminar series.
Physician Scientist Training Programs
Baylor College of Medicine offers two programs designed to prepare graduates with passions for discovery and patient care to become independent investigators in both basic research and clinical investigation.
Medical Scientist Training Program
The Medical Scientist Training Program provides integrated scientific and medical training leading to the dual M.D./Ph.D. degree to highly motivated students with outstanding research and academic potential seeking a career as a physician- scientist. Students complete the Ph.D. portion from among the diverse graduate program options at Baylor College of Medicine as well as Rice University Bioengineering Graduate Program.
Clinical Scientist Training Program (BCM Employees only)
The Clinical Scientist Training Program is designed for junior faculty and senior residents or sub-specialty fellows at Baylor College of Medicine. The program offers Ph.D. (for faculty only) and M.S. (for faculty and senior residents/fellows) degrees in clinical investigation.
