All about Advanced Practice Providers in the Department of Surgery
As part of National APP week we highlight advanced practice providers, medical professionals who work in tandem with a supervising doctor.
Advanced Practice Providers (Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants) serve as faculty members in every division of the Department of Surgery. They treat patients independently and in coordination with the physicians. Some APPs also assist during surgeries or perform procedures in the hospital or clinic setting.
The Advanced Practice Provider Council is a leadership group established in 2019 and made of up representative APPs from each division. It serves to support and promote the department's APP faculty.
The Department of Surgery is committed to advancing APPs in the key areas of clinical excellence, education and research. Our APPs are leaders in the clinical model and work in coordination with the medical directors to optimize each clinic's mission. Most of the APPs work closely with residents, fellows and students, and contribute to their educational experience.
Additionally, the annual Quality Improvement Seed Grant program offers APPs an opportunity to engage in research and present their findings during the department's Annual Research Symposium.
