The Center for Global Surgery is actively creating new virtual opportunities for discussion, education and participation. These events are made possible through collaborative relationships with universities and individuals living in regions of distress due to war and natural disasters. The topics addressed are determined by the needs of those participating.
Global Trauma Collaboration
The Global Trauma Collaboration is an online educational program developed by surgeons Rachel Davis, M.D., and Kenneth L. Mattox, M.D., which provides physicians in areas of active conflict with expert lectures in the fields of war surgery and austere critical care. This program was developed in response to requests for trauma educational support by surgeons residing and training in the country of Myanmar.
The program has grown to include a number of academic surgical institutions nationwide. Many Baylor faculty, including Kenneth L. Mattox, M.D.; Chad Wilson, M.D., MPH; Bradford G. Scott, M.D.; Marcus Hoffman, M.D.; Michael Coburn, M.D.; R. Mario Vera, M.D.; and UTHealth oral maxillofacial surgeon, Jose Marchena, M.D., D.M.D., have been featured as speakers and discussants. As the program has continued to grow, surgeons in conflict zones can now access a library of trauma lectures in an accessible language, at any time.
Global Cardiothoracic Surgery Casablanca Case Series
The Center for Global Surgery collaborates with University Mohammed Vi des Sciences de la Sante in Casablanca, Morocco to hold a case series session every two months. The Global Cardiothoracic Surgery Casablanca Case Series is organized into a five-part curriculum where topics are thoughtfully chosen, including infectious pathology, rheumatic heart disease, cardiac tumors, etc. From these themes, faculty, fellows and residents from the two institutions choose a recent case that they dive further into. Each session includes four case scenarios; most recent cases have covered heart valve disease, heart transplantation, hypertension and more. These case studies offer a unique educational opportunity for both sides to engage in a conversation that previously had not been available. Faculty and learners get the opportunity to see different cases that are not common in their region and how they manage in the operating room. We are very proud of this successful partnership and conference led by Drs. Hicham Benyoussef, Todd K. Rosengart and Lauren Barron.
