Accidental Sisters: Collaborative Storytelling, Collective Farming, and a New American Dream
with Kimberly Meyers and Esperance Chibalonza

In 2018, writer Dr. Kimberly Meyer began following the lives of six women through a post-resettlement program for single mother refugees. Working closely with translators in the women’s mother tongues, and in collaboration with the women as co-creators, she helped document the stories of their lives in their home countries, their displacement in countries of first refuge, and finally, their resettlement here in the recently published book, Accidental Sisters: Refugee Women Struggling Together for a New American Dream (University of California Press). In this session, Meyer discusses the process of writing the book and the post-traumatic growth it documents, culminating in the farm that she and Esperance Chibalonza, one of the women in it, helped found and now help collectively manage—Shamba Ya Amani / The Farm of Peace, a project of FAM Houston. She will be joined by Esperance Chibalonza, as well as by award-winning photographer, Meridith Kohut, who took the cover photo for the book as well as portraits of each of the women in it; and by Ndjabuka Francine Murhebwa, who helps run FAM Houston's Pamoja Program. At the center of both the work of the book and the work of the farm is a sisterhood, which offers a new vision for another more healing way forward for our country.
