The Henry J. N. Taub Department of Emergency Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is calling for applications for our one-year Health Policy & Advocacy Fellowship beginning in July.
The fellowship objectives will be tailored to meet the fellow’s professional goals while providing broad exposure to health policy issues relevant to Houston, the state of Texas, and the nation.
The trainee will work clinically as an emergency medicine attending at either Ben Taub General Hospital, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, or Texas Children’s Hospital which are diverse high-volume, high-acuity emergency departments in Houston, Texas.
Education
The fellowship provides advanced specialty training in health policy through hands-on experiential learning and didactic educational opportunities.
- Journal clubs
- Seminars with Texas policymakers
- Personalized didactic curriculum from nationally acclaimed faculty in the Division of Health Policy & Advocacy
Teaching
The trainee assumes a leadership role in emergency medicine education within the emergency department and residency program.
- Give lectures and facilitates small groups during residency didactics on basic health policy topics
- Serves as a teaching assistant for medical school Elective “Health Policy Journal Club”
Research
The trainee is expected to submit one publishable scholarly project during his/her training.
Administrative
The trainee will be an active participant with the Texas College of Emergency Physicians and will also be encouraged to become involved with the Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and national ACEP.
- Will be a TCEP Legislative and Advocacy Fellow
- Will gain experience in Texas policymaking during years the Texas legislature is in session (odd years)
- Will gain experience with municipal policymaking during years in which the Texas legislature is out of session (even years)
Clinical
- Approximately eight shifts per month as an attending physician in the ED
Applications
Applicants must be board-eligible/certified in emergency medicine, within five years of completing residency, and eligible to work with an independent license to practice medicine in Texas.
