Congratulations, Graduates!

Congratulations to our graduates from the School of Health Professions. Their commencement was held Sunday, Dec. 5, at the Bayou City Event Center. Faculty opportunities

Patient Safety Course: Clinical faculty, residents and fellows are needed to serve as small-group facilitators for the Patient Safety Course, meeting weekly on Thursdays from 3-4:30 p.m. Jan. 6-Feb. 24. Each facilitator will be assigned 9-10 second-year medical students to work through a clinical case. Facilitators will complete evaluations of their learners and will be evaluated by their students. Evaluations can be used in an education portfolio or as evidence of excellence in an award application. A facilitator orientation and training session will be offered Jan. 4. Associate director for the J.N. Taub & J.K. Alexander Research Symposium: Held annually to provide a formal mechanism for students to showcase their research projects; the next symposium is March 10, 2022. Responsibilities may include assisting with recruitment for reviewing and/or judging submissions, communicating with educators and students and administrative planning and implementation. HR news: Work-life balance focus of e-learning

Learning G.P.S. is the new online learning system for benefits-eligible employees. This month's topic is work-life balance with the highlighted course, "Taking Stock of Your Work/Life Balance." You'll learn techniques to analyze your current level of balance and strategies to overcome internal and external obstacles to achieving balance. For additional learning resources, click here.

Power of Poetry: noon today, MSB 5.001 on the fifth floor of the McGovern Medical School, Dr. Laura Kolbe, clinical ethics fellow from New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and award-winning poet whose work was recently featured in the New York Times Magazine, will read original work and lead a discussion on the impact of poetry, with a focus on patient-healthcare team interaction. Sponsored by the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program, McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics and the University of Houston College of Medicine.
Bioethics Grand Rounds: 5 p.m., Dec. 15, "Maximizing Life after Death: Ethical Considerations when Continuing Somatic Support for Others" with Dr. Trevor Bibler, assistant professor, Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Dr. Mark Hobeika, assistant professor at Houston Methodist and Weill Cornell Medical College, and Claire Horner, J.D., assistant professor at Baylor and clinical ethicist at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. DocTalk on intuitive eating

Join the next DocTalk from noon – 1 p.m. Dec. 14 for "Intuitive Eating for All Seasons," presented on Zoom by Courtney Cary, senior registered dietitian at Baylor. She'll discuss the practice of intuitive eating, listening to hunger cues and finding balance during the holiday season. BCM BeWell points available. Register online.

Diversity in space research

"Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Human Spaceflight: Challenges and Opportunities," is the topic of the Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research Grand Rounds, Dec. 14, noon – 1 p.m., via Zoom. Dr. Emmanuel Urquieta, assistant professor of emergency medicine and part of the Center for Space Medicine, will discuss the history of space biomedical research, its challenges, how a diverse team can improve the research and more. Professional development for trainees

The Trainee Professional Development Series resumes Dec. 15, 6 – 7 p.m. with a presentation on physician employment agreements by Nancy Publenz, D.D.S., J.D., senior corporate counsel with CommonSpirit Health. The series is a collaborative program between Baylor's Graduate Medical Education Resident Council and St. Luke’s Health designed to prepare residents and fellows for the transition from training to practice. Awards and Recognitions

Fletcher named Hastings Fellow

Dr. Faith FletcherDr. Faith Fletcher, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, was elected one of 24 new Hastings Center fellows. She joins a group of more than 200 individuals (including Dr. Amy McGuire) of outstanding accomplishment whose work has informed scholarship and public understanding of complex ethical issues in health, healthcare, science, and technology. McLaughlin earns distinguished service award

Dr. Robert McLaughlinDr. Robert McLaughlin, dean emeritus of the School of Health Professions, received the Distinguished Service and Achievement Award from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) at its recent 2021 annual conference. The award is in recognition of his dedicated support of allied health education.

Preventza named to endovascular group

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, was named president of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists (ISEVS) in October for a two-year term. ISEVS is a dedicated multidisciplinary society to improve cardiac and vascular interventions and patient care around the globe.
