Early voting

Today is the final day of early voting for the Nov. 8 midterm election. For Harris County registered voters, convenient early voting is available in the Texas Medical Center at the John P. McGovern Commons, 6550 Bertner Ave., on the first floor. Remember to bring a valid ID. Visit the non-partisan League of Women Voters for more voting resources.  

Send us your veteran photos

Are you a veteran and a member of the Baylor community? In honor of Veterans Day 2022, we would like to recognize and pay tribute to the many veterans who make up the Baylor community. Please send us your photo in uniform or during active duty, professional or candid. All submitted photos will be shared publicly on Baylor's social media channels and internal communications. This is open to students, staff and faculty. Please include your name, Baylor title, military branch, rank and years in which you served. Submissions can be made to pa@bcm.edu.

Robertson Award nominations

The 2023 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education is accepting nominations.This is the most prestigious, college-wide award for stellar and enduring contributions to the educational mission. Faculty members and leaders are strongly encouraged to identify and nominate those you believe qualified for this award. Find award criteria and application instructions here. Nominations due by Dec. 12.

Study opportunities

Intolerance of uncertainty among providers: Participants are needed for a study to explore how differences in genetics and non-genetics providers' intolerance of uncertainty impacts their ability to appropriately interpret genetic test results. Licensed physicians across all specialties (including individuals participating in residency or fellowship training) and board-certified genetic counselors are eligible to participate in this study. Childhood diabetes and bone health: Adolescents and young adults ages 12 to 18 years who are normal weight or overweight with and without type 2 diabetes are invited to participate in a research study to investigate the effect of childhood-onset diabetes on bone health and strength in youth. Study involves body composition and bone scan and blood tests. Compensation provided. If interested, call 713-798-6721.

Alzheimer's Walk

The Houston Walk to End Alzheimer's event is tomorrow, Nov. 5, at the University of Houston. Baylor is currently the largest team and the highest fundraising team, but there's always room for more! Sign up to walk or donate to help Baylor College of Medicine support the fight against this disease. Find more details and register to participate here.

DocTalk on 'diet culture'

Join Dr. Elizabeth Franklin, assistant professor of pediatrics, at noon on Nov. 9 for "Seeing Yourself Differently: Redefining Diet Culture." Franklin is a specialist in mental health and eating disorders and a psychologist with the Texas Children's Bariatric Surgery Program. BeWell points available. Register here. Questions? Duncan Cancer Center fundraising run

Help raise money for Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Terry Fox Run Houston, Nov. 12. The 5K for all ages and abilities will be held at Stude Park Community Center, 1031 Studewood, 77007, starting at 8:30 a.m. Register or donate online.  

Hermann Park volunteer opportunity

Baylor, in collaboration with Hermann Park Conservancy, will be hosting a volunteer opportunity Nov. 18 at Hermann Park, 9 a.m. – noon. Volunteers will be assisting with various projects throughout the park such as weeding, mulching and raking trails and grounds, weather permitting. Hermann Park Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park. Complete the sign-up form if you are interested; registration ends Nov. 11. Forensic Evaluation Training

The Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor will host forensic evaluation training from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Nov. 19. Learn to conduct medical and psychiatric forensic examinations to document compelling evidence of physical and psychological trauma for asylum seekers. The in-person training will be in rooms N311 and N315 in the Alkek building at main Baylor. Registration is $20 for faculty and staff, and free for students. The activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Register and find more information here.


Awards and Recognitions

Arey earns NIH Innovator Award

Dr. Rachel AreyDr. Rachel Arey, assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology and in the Center for Precision Environmental Health, has received the National Institutes of Health Director's New Innovator Award. She will receive a $1.5 million grant to study the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory in nematodes.

Gramatges to lead COG committee

Dr. Monica GramatgesDr. Monica Gramatges, associate professor of pediatrics – oncology and co-director of the Long-Term Survivor Program at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, has been named vice chair for the Children's Oncology Group (COG) Outcomes/Late Effects Committee. In this role, she will inform priorities for childhood cancer survivorship research and build collaborations across COG disease committees, domains and disciplines.

Pediatric infectious diseases physicians honored

Dr. Jeffrey StarkeDr. Katherine KingDr. Tara NessDr. Jeffrey Starke, professor of pediatrics, received the 2022 Distinguished Research Award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) in recognition of his career contributions. In addition, Dr. Katherine King, associate professor of pediatrics, was honored at the society's dinner, "Celebrating Women in Science and the People Who Inspire Them," and pediatric infectious diseases fellow Dr. Tara Ness received the St. Jude-PIDS Fellowship Award in Basic and Translational Science, a two-year, $50,000 grant. The honors came during IDWeek, the premier annual infectious diseases meeting, held Oct. 19-23 in Washington, D.C.
