BCM researchers to collaborate on grant from NHGRI

Dr. Sharon PlonBCM and Stanford University are the recipients of an $8.4 million four-year grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute to improve the clinical understanding of genetic changes that are associated with the risk of disease. Dr. Sharon Plon, professor of pediatrics and molecular and human genetics at BCM, is a principal investigator of the grant and Dr. Aleksandar Milosavljevic, professor of molecular and human genetics, and Andrew Jackson, of the Bioinformatics Research Laboratory, will serve as collaborators on the BCM project site. Teen Health Clinic leaders honored by Tejano Center

Dr. Peggy SmithDr. Peggy Smith, director of the Baylor College of Medicine Teen Health Clinic, and Anne Van Horn, administrative assistant at the Teen Health Clinic, received the President's Award from the Tejano Center for Community Concerns at the center's gala last month. They were recognized for their work at the teen health clinic at the Raul Yzaguirre School for Success, which is located on the Tejano Center campus. The school-based clinic opened earlier this year and is one of nine clinics in Harris County operated by the Baylor Teen Health Clinic.

Compassion and the Art of Medicine lectures

Upcoming talks in the Compassion and the Art of Medicine series include Dr. Brian Reed, interim chair of family and community medicine, and Dr. Asim Shah, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, who will speak on the integration of behavioral health into community medicine today, Oct. 4, in Cullen Auditorium, and Dr. William Douglas, a specialist in pediatric and congenital heart surgery, who will speak Oct. 11 in McMillian Auditorium. Douglas' lecture is the annual Matthew Carter Memorial Lecture, and he will address "The Service Oriented Physician: Laying the Foundation in Medical School." Both talks start at 12:10 p.m.

Sjögren's Syndrome Conference Oct. 5

The 2nd Annual Sjögren's Syndrome Conference at Baylor College of Medicine will be held Oct. 5. The event will include lectures from a variety of specialists who treat the immune system disorder. Aicardi symposium keynote talk Oct. 11

The Aicardi Syndrome Research Symposium and Workshop sponsored by the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, Texas Children's Hospital and BCM will include a public keynote lecture by Dr. Pasko Rakic Dorys, McConnell Duberg Professor of Neuroscience and director of the Yale Kavli Institute for Neuroscience. He will speak Oct. 11 at noon in the NRI first floor conference room on "Neuronal Migration and Brain Map Formation." Aicardi syndrome is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder affecting girls and is characterized by developmental brain abnormalities, severe seizures and eye abnormalities.

BCM ranked No. 2 by Hispanic Business

Hispanic Business magazine has named Baylor College of Medicine one of the top medical schools for Hispanic students. This year BCM is ranked No. 2, jumping from the No. 4 position held for the past two years. Each year, the magazine ranks the top 10 graduate schools in four disciplines: business, law, engineering and medicine. Schools are ranked using criteria such as enrollment, faculty, reputation, retention rate and the use of progressive programs to recruit, support and mentor Hispanic students. New leadership in surgery department

Dr. Todd Rosengart, chair of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, announced five new leadership positions within the department. Dr. Steven A. Curley was named chief of the division of surgical oncology and associate director for clinical affairs in the Dan L Duncan Cancer Center; Dr. William E. Fisher was named the new chief of the division of general surgery; Dr. Daniel Albo takes on the new role of vice-chair for network development and director for surgical network development; Dr. Bradford G. Scott was named chief of a newly-created section of trauma surgery in the division of general surgery; and Dr. Christine Ann O'Mahony has been appointed section chief of renal transplantation.

McDeavitt selected to lead PM&R

Dr. James McDeavitt, a recognized leader in educational, research and clinical programs, has been named chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at BCM. His appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2014. Read more about it online.

You FIRST news

The You FIRST Program is accepting nominations for faculty and staff of the quarter for the first quarter of FY 14. The award program recognizes faculty and staff whose exceptional contributions to BCM advance the College's mission and values. Nominations will be accepted through Oct. 11 and can be completed online. And don't forget about the BCM softball tournament organized by the You FIRST program. Come out and support your colleagues at the tournament Saturday, Oct. 5, starting at 10 a.m. at Houston Sportsplex, 12631 South Main St. Admission is $5; cash only.
