HR news: Staff Performance Management

2022 Staff Performance Management: Self-evaluations are available in SuccessFactors with a deadline to complete by Sept. 19 at 11:59 p.m. After that date, any incomplete evaluations will transfer "as is" to the manager step. This is an opportunity to be an active participant in the process by sharing your accomplishments, challenges and lessons learned from the past year. Open Enrollment updates: Human Resources has launched a new benefits platform, WEX, Inc., which replaces the Employee Self Service (ESS) system and will be used for 2023 Open Enrollment. Its new and modern design will make the benefit enrollment experience easy and straightforward. Benefits-eligible employees can access WEX through SuccessFactors by going to the "My Info" area and clicking on the WEX Check Your Benefits information tile. The 2023 Open Enrollment period is Oct. 10-24, 2022. Information will be mailed to employees' home address, so please ensure that your address is correct by Sept. 15. Clinical update

Baylor Medicine Radiology and Diagnostic Services, not including phlebotomy services, have moved to a new location at Kirby Glen, 2457 S. Braeswood Blvd., from its current location at Baylor Clinic, suite 1275. Hours of operation remain the same in the new location. Phlebotomy services (blood draws performed by Clinical Pathology Laboratories) have not moved and will continue at Baylor Clinic, 12th floor, for now, as well as at blood draw stations on the McNair Campus.

Faculty Senate 101

Baylor's Faculty Senate represents the interests of faculty across the College, providing a formal opinion on issues and policies and serving as a voice for faculty. Read more about the role of the Faculty Senate and meet some of its new leadership in this BCM Family article.

Associate director needed for medical school course

The School of Medicine is seeking an associate director for the MS1 course Immunologic and Pathologic Basis of Disease. The course typically is held in January and February. Innovative clinical faculty with a passion for and expertise in immunology and pathology and an interest in medical education can learn more and apply through the Faculty Opportunities InTouch page.

SOAR Database

The SOAR (Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research) database houses projects from investigators throughout the College. Faculty submit projects from a variety of research disciplines. The searchable database is a great place to announce your projects and research interests to an audience of motivated medical students eager to gain valuable research experience. Projects from all BCM faculty and any affiliated institution are welcome. Visit the SOAR database to view existing projects and submit your own. Instructions on how to post a project may be found by visiting the SOAR webpage or reading this pdf. If you need assistance submitting a project or have questions, please contact Dr. Kirt Martin at SOARoffice@bcm.edu.

Voter registration event

The League of Women Voters will be on campus for a voter registration event, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the E Hallway at main Baylor. Local and statewide elections will be Nov. 8. To be eligible to vote, you must be registered by Oct.11. Check your registration status.

Self-Care for healthcare professionals

Join the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center Sept. 13 for a talk on self-care opportunities in daily life. Earn 50 BeWell points after successfully completing the survey at the end of the presentation. Register here.

Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship

Celebrate your colleagues and trainees at noon Sept. 15 in Rayzor Lounge for the 2022 Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship, featuring scholarly projects by faculty, staff, students and trainees. The event is sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.  

Talk on healthcare staffing during the pandemic

Bioethics Grand Rounds presents "Holding Down the Fort: Ethical Issues Related to Staffing During the Pandemic" 5 p.m., Sept. 14, featuring Dr. Georgina Morley, nurse ethicist, Cleveland Clinic; and Donna Graves and Greg Lomasang, both registered nurses and specialty patient care directors at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. The event is sponsored by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Houston Methodist and Texas Children's Hospital. Register by Zoom.

Expert sessions on data resources

Conference on MECP2 duplication syndrome

The 2022 MECP2 Duplication Syndrome Family Conference is Sept. 23 – 24 at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, 1250 Moursund St. The conference will bring together physicians, scientists, trainees and families to discuss current developments in research and patient care, with welcome remarks by Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor at Baylor and the NRI, and sessions led by experts from Baylor, Texas Children’s and other institutions. McNair Symposium

The 10th annual McNair Symposium will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 in Room N315 in the Alkek Building. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Michelle Monje, professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford Medicine. Monje, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, will present "Synaptic Integration of Brain Cancer into Neural Circuits: New Frontiers for Neuromodulation." The poster session for McNair Scholar labs and McNair M.D./Ph.D. Scholars will be at 9 a.m. in Alkek Lobby. Register here.


Awards and Recognitions

Hodges earns grants for cancer research

Dr. H. Courtney HodgesDr. H. Courtney Hodges, assistant professor in the Center for Precision Environmental Health and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, was awarded two grants to study investigational drugs targeting the chromatin regulatory complex SWI/SNF in neuroblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia. An R01 award from the National Cancer Institute and a grant from the Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundation will together bring more than $3 million to BCM to improve epigenetic therapies against these cancers. BCM collaborators in these studies include Eveline Barbieri, Ron Parchem and Rachel Rau.

Musaad awarded grant through NIH program

Dr. Salma MusaadDr. Salma Musaad, associate professor of pediatrics – nutrition, was awarded a grant through the AIM-AHEAD Fellowship Program in Leaders of the National Institutes of Health for her project, "Using Machine Learning to Investigate Intervention Effect Disparities and Digital Phenotypes among Black Girls." The program aims to increase participation and engagement of researchers underrepresented in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
