Awards and Recognitions

Rouce honored by women in science group

Dr. Rayne RouceDr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, has received the 2021 Outstanding Women in Science Award from the Association for Women in Science – Gulf Coast Houston. She was recognized for her clinical work with pediatric leukemia and lymphoma patients and her research on T cell immunotherapy. Rouce also serves as associate dean of community engagement at Baylor and has been actively involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives. She was honored at a ceremony July 7.

Stainback named society president

Dr. Raymond StainbackDr. Raymond Stainback, has been named president of the American Society of Echocardiography. He previously served as vice president, then president-elect. He shared his vision for the organization at the ASE 2021 Scientific Sessions Virtual Experience in June.

School of Health Professions leadership

Dr. Ashley Mullen has been named interim dean of the School of Health Professions, and Dr. Aimee Gardner will serve as associate dean. In other School of Health Professions news, Elizabeth Elliott, PA-C, is now program director of the Physician Assistant Program, Katherine Erdman, PA-C, is senior associate director and Valerie DeGregorio, PA-C, is associate director. In the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, Sally Dibello, MPO, has been named interim program director.


Events

Clinical investigation courses

Registration is open through July 16 for the Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation (Aug. 2-19) and Responsible Conflict of Interest for Clinical Investigators (Aug. 23-26) courses offered by the Clinical Scientist Training Program. Registration forms and more information are available on the CSTP Courses website. The Fundamentals course will be offered both in person and online. Those who register for credit are required to attend in person in room M112 at main Baylor. Those auditing will attend via Zoom with the option of attending in person, based on space availability. Responsible Conflict of Interest will meet in person.

Join Medically Speaking Toastmasters

The BCM community is invited to join the Medically Speaking Toastmasters club, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, with virtual meetings on Tuesdays from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Meetings offer the chance to practice communication and leadership skills in a friendly environment. College News

Required OSHA training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released Emergency Temporary Standards (ETS) to help protect healthcare workers from exposure to COVID-19. The ETS requires completion of training by all BCM employees, with additional information for healthcare workers. Training must be completed by Wednesday, July 14, 2021. Access the training in the SuccessFactors Learning Management System. Questions? Email coronavirusinfo@bcm.edu.

Appointments available at new employee healthcare clinic

Scheduling is now available by calling 832-548-9775 for the new dedicated healthcare clinic for Baylor employees and their dependents covered by a BCM medical plan. The clinic opens Wednesday, July 14, in suite 1225 at Baylor Clinic. A collaboration of Baylor Medicine and Vera Whole Health, it offers personalized primary care, chronic disease management and acute medical care with no or low fees. Look for a welcome packet with more information in the mail, and stop by the information table at main Baylor in the E hallway by the cafeteria and in the Alford Education Center hallway at McNair on July 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to learn more.

BCM BeWell news: Barry's workouts

The BCM BeWell program is offering a free trial with Barry's workout classes from July 10 – 24. Staff and students can take two complimentary classes during this time. Learn more about Barry's workouts, and then sign up for classes. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Female volunteers needed for iron study

Volunteers are needed for a study on the effects of iron on the gut microbiome, results of which may benefit the treatment regimen for women with anemia. Eligible participants should be healthy females 18 – 49 years old, not pregnant or trying to become pregnant, with no history of anemia. Must provide blood and stool samples and cheek swabs and take an iron supplement every day for 14 days. Volunteers will receive monetary compensation along with lab results and a description of their gut microbiome. Learn more or sign up by emailing Dr. Sarah Detlefs.

Garage 6 after hours parking

The Garage 6 after hours parking plan decreased to $15/month, effective July 1. Operating hours for this plan are Monday – Friday, 4:30 a.m. – 8 a.m., and all day on weekends. Employees who wish to enroll can call 713-798-7275 or email commuter@bcm.edu; students should contact the TMC Parking Office at 713-794-6161, option 1.
