Welcome, students and residents!

Learner orientation

New students in the Physician Assistant Program and the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program in the School of Health Professions started classes last week. This includes 36 PA students and 24 O&P students. Learn more here about these two new classes. New residents and fellows also started arriving on campus this week, where their orientation included demonstrations and fittings of personal protective equipment, pictured here. Welcome to Baylor!

Parking subsidy increase

Reminder that the parking subsidy provided by Baylor to those using commuter options, including Metro and other bus services and van pools, and those parking in TMC remote lots will increase effective July 1. To view the new subsidy amounts and to learn what commuting options are available, head to the Parking and Commuter Services web page.

Funding opportunity: Environmental health disparities research

Applications are open for funding from the Maternal and Infant Environmental Health Research Center to support pilot projects that focus on reducing environmental health disparities. Postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, assistant professors and NIH-designated early stage investigators are invited to apply, with letters of intent due Aug. 1. The center also will host an interactive workshop for potential pilot project applicants on July 12, 4:30 – 6 pm. where center faculty from Baylor and Texas Southern University will provide information about the pilot project program, discuss potential research topics in environmental health disparities and answer questions. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and BCM Pride are hosting a booth at Houston LGBT+ Pride Celebration, June 25, 1 – 6:30 p.m. in downtown Houston near City Hall. All members of the Baylor community who are attending the celebration are invited to visit the booth. To volunteer to staff the booth, sign up here.

DocTalk on spine health

Join Dr. Emanuel Narcis Husu, an interventional pain management specialist with the H. Ben Taub Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, June 29 at noon for a DocTalk on spine health. Register via Zoom. Participants must correctly complete the survey shared during the presentation to earn BCM BeWell points.

Volunteer opportunity: Kids' Meals Inc.

Join your colleagues Wednesday, July 13, from 12-1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge in the Cullen Building to decorate brown lunch bags for Kids' Meals Inc, a local organization that delivers free healthy meals to children in need. Brown lunch bags and decorating materials will be provided. If you cannot attend the event on July 13, you can decorate your own brown lunch bags at your convenience (see instructions) and drop off by Thursday, July 14, in suite 176B at main Baylor. There also will be an in-person volunteer opportunity at Kids' Meals Inc., 330 Garden Oaks Blvd., July 13, to fill previously decorated lunch bags. Sign up here. Questions? Email Alex Alanis.


Awards and Recognitions

Ferreon earns Welch grant

Dr. Josephine Chu FerreonDr. Josephine Chu Ferreon, assistant professor of pharmacology and chemical biology, received a Welch Foundation grant for her research on intrinsically disordered proteins and their application in biotech and nanomedicine. The Houston-based foundation supports fundamental chemical research at educational institutions.   

Zoghbi honored for Rett research

Dr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Huda Zoghbi, professor of molecular and human genetics and of pediatrics and director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, was awarded the International Prize for Translational Neuroscience by the Gertrud Reemtsma Foundation for her findings on the causes of Rett syndrome. She received the award with Professor Adrian Bird of the University of Edinburgh at the June 16 Bucerius Kunst Forum in Germany.
