DeBakey Research Awards

Congratulations to the 2020 recipients of the Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Awards, Dr. Jeannie Chin, Dr. Christine Eng, Dr. Grzegorz Ira, Dr. Dennis Villareal and Dr. Yong Xu. They were selected for the quality of their significant published scientific contributions to clinical or basic biomedical research over the past three years. The awards were presented virtually this year, and a congratulatory video from Dr. Paul Klotman as well as scientific presentations for each recipient can be viewed online.

Mahoney honored by ASPHO

Dr. Donald MahoneyDr. Donald Mahoney, professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, has received the George R. Buchanan Lectureship Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. This honor is in recognition of his scientific contributions to the field and his outstanding mentorship. The award will be presented at the 2021 ASPHO Conference in Portland, Ore.

Sanber honored for cell therapy research

Dr. Khaled SanberDr. Khaled Sanber, a medical resident in internal medicine, was awarded the Early Stage Professional Abstract Award by the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy for his work entitled "Modulating negative receptor signals to improve anti-glioblastoma CAR T-cell therapy." Sanber is one of the three recipients of this award, which are being announced at the 2020 ISCT Annual Meeting May 28 – 29. He is part of internal medicine's MeRIT Program focused on training physician-investigators.


Events

May 30: Addressing implicit bias in healthcare

NAMI Greater Houston is presenting a panel discussion tomorrow, May 30, 2 – 4 p.m. titled "Diagnosis Culture: Stories as Both Poison and Cure in Maternal Health." This event focuses on implicit bias in maternal healthcare and how it impacts African Americans in Houston. The event is free but registration required.

June 8: Annual student workshop for neurosurgery

Baylor and UTHealth's departments of neurosurgery will host an information session on Monday, June 8, from 2 – 4 p.m., for current third-year medical students interested in pursuing neurosurgery as a specialty. For details, email emwalls@bcm.edu.

Clinical Research Methods by Zoom

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Family and Community Medicine will offer its beginner's Clinical Research Methods course entirely through Zoom. The course aims to train health professionals to analyze simple data using statistical analysis software. The next session is June 26 – 27. Find information and register online.

Diploma in Tropical Medicine virtual graduation

The National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine held a virtual celebration on May 21 for graduating medical students who completed the Diploma in Tropical Medicine: Joy Tan, Gail Tan, Megan Chin and Dima Jaraki. These outstanding students are the next generation of global healthcare providers. Through their training and practice, they will continue to contribute to the field of tropical medicine that will lead to the shaping of public policy and the discovery and delivery of new and appropriate technologies and treatments for tropical diseases.

HR news: Financial Wellness Day

HR-Benefits and Ayco are partnering to offer a day of webinars for employees to provide actionable insights on the financial topics most relevant to them based on where they are in their careers. The webinars will be held via Zoom on Thursday, June 4. See the schedule, then register to receive the Zoom information and to send questions in advance. BCM BeWell points available. Questions?
