COVID-19 vaccinations for adolescents

Aaron Williams receives vaccine

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for adolescents ages 12 to 15 years, and the Baylor College of Medicine Vaccine Clinic is now offering the vaccine to this age group. Employees, trainees and learners of BCM may use this link to initiate scheduling for their 12- to 15-year-old children, dependents, relatives and friends. Williams is the nephew of Quality Nurse Angela Sterling, and he is excited to get vaccinated so that he can travel for baseball tournaments! Read more in the Houston Chronicle.


Awards and Recognitions

Butler earns award, receives grant

Dr. Ashley ButlerDr. Ashley Butler, associate professor of pediatrics – psychology at BCM and Texas Children's, received the 2021 Diversity Service Award from the Society of Pediatric Psychology in recognition of her leadership, service and mentorship in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion in pediatric psychology. In addition, she received a three-year, $900,000 grant from the Health Research & Services Administration's FIRST program to create and test a home telehealth behavioral self-management intervention for youth with type 2 diabetes and their families. She will partner with the Diabetes Care Center and the University of Houston Bounce Program on this work.

Giardina named NAM scholar

Dr. Traber GiardinaDr. Traber Giardina, assistant professor of medicine – health services research with the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety (IQuESt) at the DeBakey VA, has been selected as one of 10 scholars for the National Academy of Medicine Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence program. Her work will focus on reducing misdiagnosis in healthcare.

Ph.D. student honored for work in Papageorgiou lab

Bryan AnthonioDr. Dorina PapageorgiouBryan Anthonio, a Ph.D. student in the Applied Physics Program at Rice University and a student observer at BCM under the mentorship of Dr. Dorina Papageorgiou, assistant professor at BCM, received the Smalley-Curl Innovative Research Fellowship. This honor from Rice University is based on Anthonio's academic record and on his research performed in Papageorgiou's lab, "Fabrication of an MRI-compatible oral fiberoptic sensor and decoding BCI-generated fMRI human cortical data via machine and deep learning methods."

COVID research and prevention symposium

The Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health and BCM are hosting a COVID-19 Disaster Research and Prevention Symposium on May 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The virtual event will feature speakers from Houston and France for an international perspective on the COVID-19 crisis. Financial Wellness Day

Health Equity summit

The fourth annual BCM 2021 Health Equity Summer Research Summit is Thursday, May 20, featuring a keynote address by Dr. David A. Acosta, chief diversity and inclusion officer, Association of American Medical Colleges. This virtual conference is open to anyone in the Baylor community who is committed to workforce diversity in healthcare and biomedical sciences and bringing quality healthcare to underrepresented and underserved populations. Stop Asian Hate Rally

Faculty, staff and trainees from BCM and other TMC institutions are invited to the Stop Asian Hate Rally, Friday, May 21, noon – 1:30 p.m., outside the Jewish Research Institute, 1200 Moursund. The event will feature a moment of silence, guest speakers and personal testimonies. Masks and proper physical distancing are required. The theme of the rally is yellow and red, which represent the Asian identity, strength and passion, and participants are encouraged to wear either of those colors. Organizers also are collecting personal narratives to be shared at the rally. Learn more.

Review industry payments to physicians

May 15 is the final day to review and dispute industry payments made to physicians, such as from pharmaceutical and device companies, part of the Physician Payment Sunset Act. Payments will be published publicly on June 30. Important links and detailed instructions can be found on the BCM intranet.

Library books at TMC Library

Did you know the TMC Library circulation desk is a pickup location for the Harris County Public Library? You can apply for the HCPL card at TMC Library Circulation and then request items to be sent to the TMC Library for easy med center access. You can also return HCPL books to the TMC Library or to any HCPL location.
