Blue Angels flyover

The Blue Angels flew over Houston and the Texas Medical Center Wednesday in a show of support for our region's clinicians, health professionals and researchers working at the front lines of COVID-19. This photo was captured by Earl Fogler, instructor in Baylor's Orthotics and Prosthetics program, from the roof of Garage 6.

COVID research funded

BCM sought applications around COVID-19 research in April. Fifty-nine applications were received from various departments across the College, and 11 teams were awarded funds for their research. Projects range from studying health disparities in the care of COVID patients to research on inhibitors of TMPRSS2 as therapeutics for coronavirus infection. See the full list of awardees.

Clinicians: Find telehealth and other clinical resources

A Primer on Telemedicine and other Telehealth Resources are now available on the new Baylor Clinician Resources Platform, a multipurpose website to support professional development and patient care activities. The primer contains six modules and is designed for faculty with limited to no telehealth experience. You also can find other COVID and non-COVID learning opportunities and Grand Rounds activities on the new platform.

HR COVID-19 update: Back-up child care

Good news for those needing childcare! The Bright Horizons Back-up Care benefit has been increased to 25 days per dependent (up from 20). In addition, if you cannot find appropriate care through Bright Horizons, you may also secure care through your personal network, such as a friend or relative, and be reimbursed $100 per day through May 31. Awards and Recognitions

Fonseca earns NIGMS grant

Dr. Claudia FonsecaDr. Claudia Fonseca, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, received a five-year R01 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the NIH, for her project "Uncovering inversion formation in the human genome and its impact to disease." Her collaborators include Dr. Chad Shaw, professor, and Dr. Fritz Sedlaz, assistant professor, of the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.

Ordoñez honored with visionary educator award

Dr. Edgardo OrdonezDr. Edgardo Ordoñez, assistant professor of emergency medicine, has received the 2020 Visionary Educator Award from the Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine in recognition of his extraordinary impact on the academic success of students and residents from underrepresented groups.

May 12: DocTalk on colorectal cancer

The next DocTalk by Zoom is Tuesday, May 12, noon – 1 p.m., offering a showing of a short monologue on colorectal cancer "The Bottom Line," followed by a Q&A with Dr. Milena Gould Suarez, associate professor of medicine - gastroenterology. Presented in collaboration with the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center's Office of Outreach and Health Disparities. BCM BeWell Vitality points available. Register for the talk.

May 13: HR presents MoneyTalk on Financial Fundamentals

Join the online webinar on Financial Fundamentals on Wednesday, May 13, noon – 1 p.m. Presented by Merrill, a Bank of America company, topics will include setting financial goals, creating and maintaining a budget, managing debit and more. Applications open for medical school interview committee

Applications are open until June 26 for faculty, fellows, residents and alumni to serve on the 2020-2021 Admissions Interviewing Subcommittee in the Office of Medical School Admissions. This subcommittee is charged with interviewing and evaluating medical school applicants from varied backgrounds and with varied values, beliefs, interests, experiences and cultural viewpoints to ensure a diverse student body. Call for Nominations: PA leadership award

Nominations are open until June 26 for the Carl E. Fasser Visionary Leadership Award, given annually to a Baylor College of Medicine physician assistant or program alumnus who demonstrates exceptional leadership in their field in the areas of research, education, clinical practice, administration and community service. Nominate online.

Spring CVRI newsletter

The Spring 2020 Cardiovascular Research Institute newsletter is available online. The Spring issue features a highlight of COVID-related work by CVRI faculty, a recap of honors and awards as well as recent publications, information on upcoming events and more.
