Coronavirus Information

Temporary medical exemption

Effective Jan. 5, all requests for temporary medical exemptions during the pandemic should be initiated by emailing disability@bcm.edu. This is the same process for workplace accommodations that are not COVID-19 related. Read more on the ADA Intranet Page and 02.2.30 Accommodations for Employees policy. Current COVID-specific medical exemptions will expire on Feb. 2. Employees' unit administrators will be in contact regarding next steps to continue receiving any workplace accommodations. Please contact disability@bcm.edu for additional questions or to request any accommodation(s) based on your own medical condition.

Vaccination notification to BCM

Have you received a COVID-19 vaccine somewhere other than BCM, Harris Health or Texas Children's? Please declare that you received it by clicking 'Submit Vaccine Record' on BCM's vaccine app. Vaccination records of employees and learners who received the vaccine at BCM, Harris Health and Texas Children's will be automatically documented. This information will help with workforce planning.

Medical student D'Silva earns thoracic surgery award

Ethan D'SilvaBaylor medical student Ethan D'Silva was selected as a 2021 Looking to the Future Scholar in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His nomination was sponsored by Dr. Scott LeMaire, professor and vice chair for research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. As a recipient of this scholarship, D'Silva will attend the society's annual meeting being held virtually Jan. 29 – 31. Residents and students selected represent the best and brightest of the trainees in or considering this field.

Eknoyan honored with named lectureship

Dr. Garabed Eknoyan The American Society of Nephrology and KidneyCure have established the Garabed Eknoyan Endowed Lectureship, which will be delivered annually at ASN Kidney Week, starting this November, on a topic related to advances in clinical care of patients with chronic or end-stage kidney diseases. The lectureship is named in honor of Dr. Garabed Eknoyan, distinguished emeritus professor of medicine – nephrology, who has had a 50-plus year career at Baylor and was a key architect of clinical practice guidelines in nephrology, including the Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative and the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative.

Kosten articles highlighted by JAMA

Dr. Tom KostenDr. Tom Kosten's recent article in JAMA Psychiatry on opioid overdoses during the coronavirus pandemic was highlighted in the JAMA Network COVID-19 update email. Read the study online. In addition, his 2018 article, "Opioid Use Disorder after Self-medicating Pain from Traumatic Brain Injury," was listed in JAMA Psychiatry's top CME articles. Read the article.

Inspiring Black Scientists includes Baylor community members

Baylor faculty, staff and trainees were among those named among the 1,000 Inspiring Black Scientists in America by the scientific publication Cell Mentor. Read the article and see the full list.

The BCM community is invited to attend the eighth annual Out for Health Conference, Jan. 23, organized by Texas medical school students to address the healthcare needs of the LGBTQIA+ population. Stalking awareness

January is Stalking Awareness Month. The College defines stalking as engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes that person (or a member of that person's family or household) to fear for their safety or the safety of others. Stalking is unpredictable, dangerous and a crime in all 50 states. If you are being stalked, trust your instincts, take threats seriously, develop a safety plan and tell those around you. IT News: BCM email on Android devices

Android users may no longer receive BCM email on their device due to deactivation of older email protocols, which will occur on Feb. 25. To continue using BCM email on your phone, BCM IT recommends that you install the Microsoft Outlook app from the Play Store. Read more about this change in this IT knowledge article. Visit the IT Service Portal and search for "modern authentication" to view related knowledge articles or to report a problem.
