Atonal homologue 1 (Atoh1, Math1), the mouse homolog of Drosophila atonal is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor (Akazawa et al., 1995), required for the establishment of small progenitor populations giving rise to diverse cell types, ranging from secretory lineages in the intestine (Yang et al., 2001), Merkel cells in the skin (Ben-Arie et al., 2000; Maricich et al., 2009), hair cells of the inner ear (Bermingham et al., 1999), commissural interneurons of the dorsal spinal cord (Bermingham et al., 2001), a multitude of hindbrain nuclei in the brain stem required for breathing (Machold and Fishell, 2005; Rose et al., 2009) as well as the granule cells of the cerebellum (Ben-Arie et al., 1997). Our lab continues to study the functions of Atoh1 in murine development.
