Drug-resistant bacterial infections cost many lives and billions of dollars each year yet the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying the occurrence of antibiotic resistance remain obscure. Based on analysis of the Escherichia coli pan-genome we have identified SNPs that are correlated with fluoroquinolone resistance in clinical isolates. My goal is investigate whether these SNPs contribute to a mechanism for promoting antibiotic resistance in pathogens.
