About the Cultivation Core

The Cultivation Core in the Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome research facilitates functional assessment of microbial communities by providing access to the resources and expertise needed to cultivate microbes from diverse environments.

Our primary expertise lies in cultivation of individual microbes and complex communities associated with mammalian gastrointestinal tracts (human, murine, and porcine). We use both cutting-edge and conventional approaches to capture microbial diversity in culture and can work with collaborators to adapt existing protocols to better emulate environmental and nutritional parameters important to cultivating microbes from new environmental niches.
