CIBR Roundtable/Workshop on Data Storage Issues for Basic Research

Dr. Steve Ludtke
Roundtable participants: Dr. Aleksandr Milosavljevic, Dr. Lauren Becnel, Dr. Chad Shaw

The onslaught of genomics, proteomics and new imaging data means that basic research data storage needs are exploding College-wide, a universal problem that NIH "Big Data" initiative acknowledges (http://bd2k.nih.gov/). One problem is that each individual research lab faces a wide range of highly technical choices to meet their unique data storage and processing needs. This meeting, followed by a roundtable discussion will overview some of the solutions currently available for storage in the 1 terabyte to 1 petabyte range, including solutions ranging from in-lab units, to collaborative approaches, to cloud services. The roundtable will be led by several PIs in the college who have dealt with these issues in different ways for different classes of problems, and will include Drs. Ludtke, Milosavljevic, Becnel and Shaw. The meeting is open to any faculty, postdocs, students or staff who have a stake in these data storage issues.
