Intermediary metabolism in different pathological states

My research focuses on the intermediary metabolism of macronutrient fuels. An area of primary interest currently is the altered metabolic response to the stress of infection and its impact on nutritional requirements during early growth and development. Studies are being performed in both animals and humans to determine how stress alters protein, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Another area of research concerns the production of antioxidants and proteins involved in the immune response. I am particularly interested in how production of these important factors are affected by conditions such as protein-energy malnutrition, HIV infection, sepsis, aging and diabetes mellitus. Specific studies focus on the metabolism of glutathione, cysteine, acute phase proteins and nitric oxide. A final area of interest looks at the impact of obesity and undernutrition on certain aspects of the metabolic and physiologic adaptations necessary for a successful pregnancy.

These studies utilize a variety of stable isotopic tracer techniques, some of which have been developed specifically for these studies.
