Dysregulation of developmentally expressed signaling pathways during fetal development, early childhood, or even adulthood can significantly contribute to the development of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, obesity, and type II diabetes. Our lab is currently investigating the role of one of these signaling pathways, the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway, in the specification of adipose cell lineages in vertebrates. By using a combination of mouse genetic, molecular, and developmental biology, biochemical approaches, we hope to develop a broad understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying adipose tissue formation.
