Research Interests

Dr. Hurwitz is a Research Co-Director of the Retinoblastoma Center of Houston. In this capacity, Dr. Hurwitz is a member of a research and clinical team that is striving to improve the outcomes for children with retinoblastoma by reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with current treatment protocols. Dr. Hurwitz’ laboratory is involved in pre-clinical and translational studies designed to examine viral-mediated gene therapy for the treatment of ocular disorders including retinoblastoma. These studies include 1) elucidation of the unique properties of adenoviral transduction in the ocular environment; 2) investigation of immune consequences of adenoviral-mediated gene transfer; 3) elucidation of the differences between metastatic and non-metastatic tumor development; and 4) characterization of stem cell populations in retinoblastoma tumors and cell lines derived from those tumors.
