Research Interests

Dr. Hurwitz is interested in the development and treatment of the ocular malignancy retinoblastoma. Studies are being conducted both in vitro and in vivo to define and characterize tumor initiating cell populations and to understand the growth of these tumors in the unique ocular environment. Innovative treatments using viral vectors to transfer potentially therapeutic genes into retinoblastoma are being examined in pre-clinical studies. In addition, Dr. Hurwitz is the principal investigator of the Texas Children's Cancer Center Tumor/Tissue Bank and directs the Research Tissue and Support Service for Texas Children's Hospital.
