Professional Statement
The projects/roles I have pursued during my medical career and as a medical educator have explored the use of innovative teaching techniques and educational technology to make lectures and curricula more engaging, interactive, and learner focused. I have done research in and published projects on asynchronous learning, simulation and rapid cycle deliberate practice, social media engagement with board style questions, and the standardization of handoffs in the emergency department utilizing online and in-person educational interventions. I continue to participate and lead institutional and regional work in these areas. Current projects include a grant-funded study to develop a standardized online educational curriculum in pediatric procedural sedation, a study to develop a rubric for evaluating online modules, and a fellow-led study to develop a humanism and professionalism curriculum for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows. In my educational leadership roles as the PEM Director of Pediatric Resident Education (August 2013-present) and as the Associate Fellowship Director and Co-Program Director for the PEM Fellowship (July 2018-present) I have aimed to develop innovative curriculum, compile informative learner assessments, and provide valuable mentorship to residents and fellows through their academic career development. As a member of the Editorial Board for the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) online learning center, Pedialink, I have collaborated with other educational leaders nationally to help redesign, implement, and evaluate Pedialink as an educational tool for lifelong learning and maintenance of certification (MOC).
I obtained my Master of Education in 2018 because I have and will always strive to seek out opportunities to improve my skills and knowledge as a medical educator so that I can most effectively disseminate new ideas to others through education, scholarly work and educational research.
