Dr. Scott A. LeMaire, Jimmy and Roberta Howell Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery and vice-chair of research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, has been elected to serve as the secretary of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, a charitable division of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. The TSF supports a wide array of initiatives including, research grants and fellowships, traveling fellowships, projects that provide charitable work, and educational scholarships. The focus of the TSF is to curate the growth of surgeon-scientists in cardiothoracic surgery by expanding knowledge and innovation to the advantage of patient care. Dr. LeMaire has previously served as a member of the TSF research and education committee from 2014-2018, including his time as chair from 2016-2018, and has served as a member of the board of directors since 2019.
 
Dr. LeMaire’s career was jump started in 2005 with support from a grant provided by TSF. He since has received funding and support from the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association to help study the pathobiology of thoracic aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection. In 2002, his research group initiated the Thoracic Aortic Disease Tissue Bank, which currently houses samples and phenotypic data from over 4,000 patients with thoracic aortic diseases. Furthermore, since his time with the department, he has received both the Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Award and the Fulbright & Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching and Evaluation, among the most prominent awards in research and education given by the College.
