Being hair free now is free of pain

Many people are willing to deal with the pain of permanent hair removal in exchange for the smooth outcomes, but health care professionals at Baylor College of Medicine say that pain is now a thing of the past.

A new hair removal laser, called the LightSheer Duet: Luminus, is being used at the Baylor Clinic. It is only one of a few being used in the Houston area and is faster and nearly painless compared to conventional lasers.

Treatment time cut in half

"No numbing cream is needed so prep time, which typically can be up to an hour, has been eliminated," said Elaine Wells, R.N., nurse supervisor in the department of dermatology at BCM and the only nurse at BCM trained to use the new technology.

The laser has a larger head compared to others allowing for a faster treatment.

"More surface area of skin can be covered at one time compared to the tiny points that conventional laser hair removal treatment use," Wells said. "On average this machine cuts treatment time in half."

The LightSheer Duet works best on fair skin with dark pigmented hair. Treatments are given every two months and between four to eight sessions are needed. Patients tend to be satisfied when 75 percent hair reduction is achieved.

Look for trained professionals

When considering any laser treatments, Wells said it is important to make sure the person administering the laser has been properly trained.

In addition to her five years experience using traditional laser hair removal systems, Wells works side by side with Dr. Ramsey Markus, assistant professor of dermatology and the director of the Laser Center at BCM. She also attends in-services and conferences of the Dermatological Nurses Association to stay up to date on new advances in technology.
