Ugly Holiday Sweaters

An Ugly Holiday Sweater contest was hosted Dec. 15 by Lenore Melanson, executive assistant in the Office of Dr. James McDeavitt. About 20 faculty and staff participated, but Dr. Paul Klotman's dachshund, Lily, stole the show.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Shani Johnson, clinical fellow in pediatric hematology and oncology at Texas Children's Hospital, has been named a Jeanne Marie Lusher Diversity Fellowship recipient by the National Hemophilia Foundation. This fellowship aims to increase diversity among benign hematologists by fostering a career-long interest in inherited bleeding/blood disorders.

Dr. James F. Martin, professor of molecular physiology and director of the Cardiomyocyte Renewal Lab at the Texas Heart Institute, has received funding from Additional Ventures Single Ventricle Research Fund for his application "Hippo/Yap signaling and genetic networks of HLHS." SVRA is an annual program that provides up to $200,000 per year for up to three years for research projects.

Dr. Robert McLaughlin, dean emeritus of the School of Health Professions, received the Distinguished Service and Achievement Award from the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) at its recent 2021 annual conference. The award is in recognition of his dedicated support of allied health education.

Share your holiday spirit: Snap a photo of your office, lab or clinic ready for the holidays and email to Anna Kiappes by 2 p.m. Dec. 17. Please include names and departments. Holiday schedule: Baylor will be closed Dec. 24 and 31 for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Morrison Café at main Baylor also will be closed Dec. 23, and other TMC food options may be limited. BCM shuttle service will operate on the Red shuttle schedule Dec. 22-23 and Dec. 29-30. This route runs from 6:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. from main Baylor – Baylor Clinic – McNair Campus (two stops) – VA – McGovern.

Faculty Opportunities

Seeking Associate Director: The School of Medicine is seeking a faculty member to serve as the associate director for the Henry J.N. Taub & J.K. Alexander Research Symposium, which will be held March 10, 2022. Each year, BCM holds the symposium, which provides a formal mechanism for students to showcase their research projects. Responsibilities may include assisting with recruitment for reviewing and judging submissions, communicating with educators and students and administrative planning and implementation. If hired, you will receive a formal letter of thanks from the symposium director and the School of Medicine curriculum leadership to acknowledge your participation. Patient Safety Course: The Office of Curriculum is actively recruiting clinical faculty to serve as small-group facilitators for a patient safety course, which will meet Thursdays at 3 p.m. Jan. 6-Feb. 24. Each facilitator will be assigned 9-10 MS2 students to work through a clinical case. In addition, a facilitator orientation and training session will be offered Jan. 4. Small groups meet on Jan. 13, 20, Feb. 3, 10, 17, and 24. Facilitators should attend all of sessions; however, a limited number of substitutes will be available for a scheduled absence.
