Faculty Kudos

Dr. Shixia Huang, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology, was the program director and symposium chair for the BCM-BRITE 2022 High School Student Biotechnology Research Symposium in September. The symposium is an opportunity for students to organize their research work into a structured abstract and present it in a poster or PowerPoint format for their peers and mentors.

Dr. Ashley Mullen, assistant professor in the School of Health Professions and director of the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, was recently appointed as a board member of the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics. ABC establishes and advocates for the highest patient care and organizational standards in the provision of safe and effective orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic services.

Dr. Seth Lerner, professor of urology, has been awarded a Presidential Citation from the American Urological Association, for his dedication to clinical trials and studying the genetic foundations of bladder cancer. Each year, the AUA honors contributions of physician researchers and educators to the field of medicine, the specialty of urology and the association.

Dr. Monica Gramatges, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology and associate section chief of oncology at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, has been named co-chair of the Genetics Working Group for the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. In this role, she will guide development of research projects that use genomic data from the CCSS, a cohort of more than 35,000 survivors of childhood cancer and 5,000 sibling controls from 31 participating sites across the United States.

Dr. Megan Bullerwell, assistant professor and associate director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program-Nurse Anesthesia, has become a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Bullerwell is the fourth faculty member in the School of Health Professions to become certified in simulation education.

Parking rate increase: The Texas Medical Center has announced parking rate increases, effective Jan. 1. Baylor provides subsidies for commuting options, including Metro, vanpools and remote-lot parking. See the parking rates and options available on the Parking and Commuter Services InTouch page. All parking changes must be submitted to commuter@bcm.edu by Dec. 16.

DLDCCC Seminar: At 8 a.m., Dec. 15, the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center will host a virtual seminar by Dr. Saba Shaikh, assistant professor of hematology/oncology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center at Temple University. Cardiovascular Seminar Series: The James T. Willerson, MD Cardiovascular Sciences Seminar Series  continues at 11 a.m. Dec. 14  in Kleberg Auditorium. The featured speaker will be Dr. Jianyi "Jay" Zhang from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, who will deliver "modRNA Therapeutics vs. hiPSC-derived Cell & Cell-products for Myocardial Repair in Large Mammals: Remuscularization of Injured Ventricle." The seminar is jointly organized by Baylor's Cardiovascular Research Institute and the Texas Heart Institute. CME credit is available. Email cvri@bcm.edu for more information.

Mentorship Award: The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics is accepting nominations for the Arthur L. Beaudet, M.D. Award for Outstanding Mentorship. The award is open to any outstanding Baylor faculty mentor from any discipline and all academic ranks. Eligible candidates must have demonstrated a sustained career of exemplary mentorship at the graduate, postdoctoral, residency, fellowship or junior faculty level across the educational, clinical and research missions of the College. Robertson Award Nominations: The 2023 Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education is accepting nominations for this college-wide award for stellar and enduring contributions to the educational mission. As part of the Baylor academic community, you are encouraged to identify and nominate those you believe qualified for this award. Visit the award website for criteria and instructions. Clark Faculty Service Award: This prestigious, college-wide award recognizes Baylor College of Medicine faculty members whose exemplary service contributions have not been recognized before. Faculty members are encouraged to nominate colleagues who demonstrate a consistent commitment to excellence, altruism and community – and to Baylor's mission, vision and values – through either a single endeavor or multiple service activities.
