Dr. Klotman's entry in the 20th annual BCM Charity Art Show

Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine, submitted multiple photographs for the 20th annual BCM Charity Art Show. The virtual art show runs until Nov. 19, and all prints are still available for bid. A portion of the proceeds benefit Texas Children's Hospital Periwinkle Arts in Medicine Program, and the rest goes directly to the artists. View and bid online.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Christy Y. ChaiDr. Christy Y. Chai, associate professor of surgery in the division of surgical oncology, is the recipient of the 2021 Association of Women Surgeons Break the Glass Ceiling Award in the amount of $4,800. The grant provides funding for Chai to attend a leadership conference or course of her choosing.

Nine BCM faculty members were named in the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers List for 2021, including Dr. Christie M. Ballantyne, Dr. Hashem B. El-Serag, Dr. Malcolm K. Brenner, Dr. Richard Gibbs, Dr. Helen Heslop, Dr. Sanjay Mathew, Dr. Joseph Petrosino, Dr. Cliona Rooney and Dr. Joseph Jankovic.

Dr. Richard SifersDr. Richard Sifers, professor of pathology and immunology, molecular and cellular biology and molecular physiology and biophysics, has contributed to the development of a new book titled "Career Advice for Young Scientists in Biomedical Research: How to Think Like a Principal Investigator," Springer, 2021. The book is available to buy.

In November

Sleep symposium: On Nov. 18, the Departments of Pediatrics, Neurology and Neuroscience will co-host a virtual workshop, 2021 Sleep and Neurodevelopment Symposium: The Early Years. The workshop will discuss current sleep metrics in infancy and toddlerhood and how to best increase the limited studies of sleep and behavior in humans. Dr. Seth Blackshaw, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins Medicine, will be the keynote speaker. To register, visit the event website.

Magnet schools: Nov. 18 is the deadline for families to submit for priority consideration for Phase 1 at biomedical-focused schools in Houston Independent School District, including BCM Academy at James D. Ryan MS, BCM Biotech Academy at Rusk MS and DeBakey High School for Health Professions. Families may still submit an application for unfilled seats during Phase 2, Nov. 19-March 10, 2022. Off Script: Stories on Homebound: Join the virtual storytelling event from 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18 to hear stories from the Texas Medical Center community on "homebound" – a time when "home" was redecorated, overpopulated, underappreciated or abandoned altogether. Sponsored by the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program. Register online.

DocTalk: Fifty BCM BeWell points are available to those who attend the next virtual DocTalk: Pancreatic Cancer noon Nov. 23. Participants will learn more about this disease including risk factors, treatment options and more. Register online.

Compassionate Conversations for Change: The Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host the next Compassionate Conversations for Change virtually at 5 p.m. Nov. 30. "Afghan Clinic: A Public Health Intervention by and for Afghan Refugees" will address ongoing social injustice and equity issues and feature sisters Dr. Nazineen Kandahari, UC-San Francisco School of Medicine, and Nilufar Kayhani, a health undergraduate at UC-Berkeley. Physicians for Human Rights at BCM and Culture of Health Advancing Together will also present. Register at the event website.

Monthly Education Training Series: Rajvi Parmar, a quality assessment specialist for WellSpan Health, will speak at the next virtual METS event at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 1. The topic will be "Implementing Quality Management at the Site Level." METS is a Texas Medical Center monthly training series for all clinical research professionals. TMC co-hosts with the Texas chapter of Society of Clinical Research Associates, Inc. To register, visit the event website.

Survey design seminar: Dr. Joel Purkiss, assistant professor in the Department of Education, Innovation and Technology, will speak 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at a webinar, "Introduction to Survey Design, Administration, and Analysis." Presidential Award for Excellence in Education: The Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2022 Barbara and Corbin J. Mentor training workshop: Registration is open for the Optimizing Mentoring Relationships Research Mentor Training Foundations Workshop. Two sessions are available at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dec. 10. The workshop is designed to help you become a more effective research mentor through case study discussion, activities and small groups. The workshop qualifies as evidence-based mentor training for National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation interests. To register, visit the event website.
