Faculty Kudos

Dr. George G. Rodney, associate professor of molecular physiology, and Dr. Reem S. Abo-Zahrah, a researcher who received her Ph.D. from Baylor, were part of a research team at UTHealth Houston that discovered the novel role of a protein in cancer cachexia. Read more in Inside Precision Medicine.

Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds: At 5 p.m. Nov. 9, join a virtual bioethics Grand Rounds for "Patient Perspectives on Reproductive Decision Making: An Interfaith Panel," featuring Claire Horner, assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Dr. Deepak Sarma, professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and Rabbi Pamela B. Drug Discovery Lecture: At 11 a.m. Nov. 10, Dr. Helen I. Zgurskaya, a biochemist and microbiologist in the field of antibiotic resistance and drug permeation in bacteria, will present the 13th Alexander R. Matzuk Lecture in Drug Discovery at Baylor. Join in person at the 7th floor auditorium at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute or by Zoom (meeting ID: 943 5569 2817; password 829887).

Fun Run and Walk: At 7 a.m. Oct. 29, join DeBakey High School for Health Professions for a free fun run and walk. Participants can either run or walk a route that starts at DeBakey High School, 2545 Pressler St., and tours the Texas Medical Center. Snacks, water and a timer will be provided for those interested. Please complete the RSVP form.

Faculty Opportunities

Education Hackathon: The Hackathon's kickoff event will be at noon Nov. 17 in Kleberg Auditorium. There will be a keynote from Dr. Louis Deslauriers, director of science teaching and learning at Harvard. Teams will then work to form innovative solutions to the hackathon problem and share their ideas in a competitive pitch event on March 8 for the chance to win $25,000 in grant support for their idea. This second annual Education Hackathon is sponsored by the Department of Education, Innovation & Technology

Associate Course Director for Infectious Diseases Course: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an associate course director for the MS1 Infectious Diseases course. Forensic Evaluation Training: From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 19, the Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor will host forensic evaluation training. The virtual event is free to all participants. Learn to conduct medical and psychiatric forensic examinations to document compelling evidence of physical and psychological trauma for asylum seekers. The activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Register and find more information.

White coat recycling: The annual lab coat and scrubs recycling event, sponsored by Baylor's Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program will be Oct. 24-28. Clean and uncontaminated garments will be accepted at the first-floor mailboxes in the McNair building and in the E hallway located between Rayzor Lounge and the courtyard at main Baylor.

SOAR: The Office of Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research invites faculty at Baylor and its affiliates to submit research projects to the SOAR database. Basic, translational and clinical research projects may be submitted, as well as projects in the areas of medical education, patient safety and health services research. Visit the SOAR database to view existing projects, submit your own or connect with medical students eager to gain research experience. The database features a simple and intuitive online interface for project entry. Instructions on how to post a project may be found on the SOAR webpage. Questions? Wellness Focus Group: Baylor is seeking faculty to participate in a focus group on faculty engagement and wellness, with the goal of identifying actionable ways leadership can better support the community. Participation involves a time commitment of 45-60 minutes, with a virtual meeting on Microsoft Teams. All participant responses will be confidential. HPV study: Researchers are looking for male participants between the ages 50 and 64 for a screening trial aimed at early detection of HPV-related throat cancer. If interested, please register here. For any questions, please contact Giselle Santillana at 713-798-3261 or hpvtrial@bcm.edu.

Flu vaccine attestation: The Occupational Health Program is offering flu shots to Baylor students, residents, staff and faculty. Use the Baylor Flu Vaccine App to make your reservation and complete attestation by Nov. 30. You may also receive your flu shot at a local pharmacy, clinic or your healthcare provider. Regardless of where you were vaccinated, please complete the attestation through the Baylor Flu Vaccine App.

Development Workshops: The Center for Teaching and eLearning will host two new workshops in November and December. To register and learn about workshops, visit Teaching with Innovative Learning Technologies (TILT).
