Small world: Jason Kirk, director of the Optical Imaging & Vital Microscopy Core at Baylor, placed first in the Nikon's Small World competition for his image of a southern live oak leaf. You can see trichome (white), stomata (purple) and vessels (cyan). It was taken with 60x objective magnification with a combination of diffused reflected light and red filtered transmitted light. See his past images from the Baylor core lab that have been recognized by Nikon.

LCME updates:

  • The School of Medicine will host a virtual site visit with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) Sept. 27 – 29. The LCME survey team will review the school's accreditation survey package and meet virtually with students, residents, staff and faculty as part of the process. At the conclusion of the visit, the survey team will submit a final report and the LCME will determine the accreditation status of the program and provide notification of status in Spring 2022.   • The LCME monthly newsletter: The School of Medicine's September newsletter features an overview of Element 7.9 – Interprofessional Collaborative Skills. Read the September newsletter.

PostDoc appreciation: National Postdoc Appreciation Week is currently underway. Faculty had the opportunity to share kudos, thanks and examples of how postdocs are appreciated at Baylor. Read about what makes Baylor College of Medicine's postdocs so great!

White coat recycling: The annual lab coat and scrubs recycling event, sponsored by the BCM Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program, is Oct. 4-7. Clean and uncontaminated garments will be accepted in the E hallway located between Rayzor Lounge and the courtyard at the main campus of Baylor.

Blood drive: Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will be having a blood drive on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Rayzor Lounge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Successful donors receive a free T-Shirt. To donate, please sign up for an appointment. Use sponsor code: 4402. Questions? Email Gabrielle Coats.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Jeffery Sutton, director of the Center for Space Medicine at Baylor, had the distinction of presenting an award named in his honor to a researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern. The Jeffrey P. Sutton Scientific Achievement Award is presented each year for outstanding contributions in advancing the frontiers of science and research in the field of space medicine. Sutton presented to Dr. Benjamin Levine for his work with NASA studying spaceflight's effect on the human body.

Dr. Asim Shah was appointed as the representative from Fort Bend County to the Board of Trustees of Texana, a nonprofit that provides behavioral healthcare and developmental disabilities services regionally. Shah is executive vice chair and professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Marisa Hilliard has been awarded the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to conduct a three-year multisite pilot trial of a brief behavioral intervention targeting health-related quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes across the lifespan and their parents or partners. The more than $1.5 million grant will test the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, costs and potential for implementation in practice.

Faculty Opportunities

Alumni awards: Nominations for the annual Baylor College of Medicine Alumni Awards are open. Alumni Awards recognize alumni and faculty that have made significant contributions to their fields. To submit your nominations and to learn more, please visit the awards website. The nomination deadline is Oct. 8.

Life support instructors: The Department of Emergency Medicine offers American Heart Association Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support initial certification and recertification courses, and the department is always recruiting great instructors for the program. Notify coordinator Helen Dailey if you are interested in joining the education team.

Grand round speakers: The Center of Excellence in Health Equity, Training and Research in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity is interested in collaborating with Baylor departments/centers and faculty to identify speakers for one of its monthly Health Equity Grand Rounds. Contact Dr. Jean Raphael, associate professor of pediatrics and COE associate director for health equity, if you are interested.
